Are the starter and solenoid separate pieces on a 96 4runner?

The solenoid is mounted to/part of the starter.
what kind of starting issues are you getting?

Sometimes, it will just click. Other times, it cranks once, weakly, and then stops. I can still get it to start if I'm persistant

I let mine do that for about 3 weeks before it died... then I had it replaced, and when they had it apart, I had em do the clutch too. that was at like 160k I think??
I'm on my third starter at 180k
My first OEM starter went out early at around 60k, the replacement lasted nearly twice as long (roughly 120k) which I just replaced about a month ago, so I'm now on my third one. Once they start clickin' & tickin', it'll get progressively worse until it doesn't turn over any more. If it's taking several tries to start, it's probably near the end and needs to be replaced.

FYI, if you are heavy off roader, I would suggest running a breather line off the starter and putting in high in the engine bay. I got some water up in that breather on the starter and had issues starting the runner for a couple of weeks. I'm guessing it dried out because it starts perfectly fine now.

Ok most of the time if you are getting a good solid CLICK then you can spend $20 and get the contacts for the solenoid and replace them yourself. This is a lot better then the average cost of about $180 I found on a new starter. I bought my contacts a week or so ago and just havnt had time to do the replacement but looks real easy to do. I will try to take pics when I do get around to doing them.

Mine was 200 for a rebuilt 1.8kw starter. I don't know if you have replaced a starter on a v6 but its not the most enjoyable. I am fortunate to have a full service garage at my use so it wasnt so bad. If you are doing this on the floor, you only want to do it once. I fugured that if the contacts are worn, then the rest of the starter is dirty and while you've got the thing out to change the contacts ( I really think its next to impossible to change them in the vehicle) just replace the whole thing. (peace of mind!) It's all personal preference and budget! IMO!

When I had my timing belt, components and water pump replaced, I had the mechanic throw in new contacts in the starter while the runner was apart. Haven't had any issues since. Getting close to 200K on the original starter. $20 as oppose $180 helped out considering how much was spent on all the other work performed. Next time the belt will be done by me.

I hear that.
I've done a couple of the 5VZ starter contacts and didn't find it all that hard to remove. If anyone buys a brand new starter for a 5VZ or 3RZ, I will "recycle" your old one for free. Hell I'll pay shipping.

Call up your local Toyota dealership and see what they got, all 3 were in stock last time I got them....
