Just wondering if anyone has used / heard the JL stealthbox, http://jlaudio.com/stealthbox/4RUNR9602.html for the runner? I've heard a lot of negative things about the Q-logic enclosure but not much about JL. (Maybe because they are so freakin expensive!!:)) I have the sub(s) if anyone knows where to get them not "loaded".

Thanks

nope sorry no unloaged stealthbox
here is an email from jl

Good morning Matthew,
Sorry, we don't sell Stealthbox enclosures naked without woofers. This is a
complete engineered package that's tuned for the woofer that comes with it
in the vehicle it was designed for. Good luck, and thanks for your interest
in Stealthbox!
Sincerely,
Don Vertree

what bad thingd have you heard about the q-logic boxes?

I was thinking about buying it a while back. But the price kept me away. Wasn't it like $500 ?? I saw mine at Tweeter. But you had to order it of course. I think that would be the best. You can have it and still slide things in the back of the 4runner. Plus JL in a good brand. A lot of people said good things about JL audio.

thanks for the info from JL.

I have one. I bought it from A&B for $650. It cheaper than building a custom enclosure. I replaced the JL sub with an Alpine Type R sub. It sounds great now. I'll be taking my truck apart next spring to sell. If you're interested in the box then let me know!

I guess a related question to this is the 4th gen runners come with a JBL enclosure from the factory, there are pics here http://www.castulucci.com/projects/carpc/oemnaviecuaccess/ . My question is if anyone has tried to squeeze that enclosure into the same location on 3rd gen as there is a storage cubby there that might have enough room. Any ideas if it will fit? I'm actually not even sure what size that stock sub is, (8 or 10"), how does it sound?

Thanks,
Ed

How much power are you supplying the Alpine. I have the Stealthbox too and went through a swap out the Sub phase but never acted on it. Is the mounting depth an issue? I was thinking about swapping it out with a 10W3.

Was the improvement that much greater?

Curous..I was looking at getting one of these and if there is enough interest we could look at getting a group buy through a retailer. Since the product would be special order, perhaps we could drop ship it from the distributor to each purchasers address. Regarding volume size, you can always reduce the volume by pouring resin into the enclosure, however once you do that I suppose it would be permanent.
I would think that with 5 or more we could find a shop to sell them at 25-30% off retail, considering mark-up is probably around 60-80%. Let me know if you're interested and I'll look into with a couple retailers here in CO.

i'd be interested, but do they still make the one for the older 4runner? i have a 97 and i don't see it on the site. what is the mounting depth on those suckers anyway? my brahma needs a new home.

I'm running an old PPI Art series 75x2 to a Dual voice coil Alpine Type R. Depthwise is fine. The type R sub has taller flanges than the JL sub. It will fit in, but you will have to modify the JL grill to make it stay in place. The sound is way better. I was always bagging my JL. I hated it.

However it still does not sound as good, as it would with a regular box back there. But I need the space.

My original post links to the one for your year, 96-02, doesn't it?
