steering problem

i just got a 99 4runner w/ ~97k miles and the steering wheel is awful. when turning the steering is stuck there, it doesnt move back to center again and i have to turn the wheel to center it. the power steering is really hard to turn.

the problem that i suspect is the leaking at the steering rack boots (both side). would this cause the steering to be so hard to turn? thit might be far fetch but would there something else like alignment that causes this?

there might be some gummy buildup under those boots. I would have a r&p installed.

Well it could be a number of things causing this problem. Have you checked the power steering fluid lately? Of course if the boots are leaking, exposing the inner tie rod ends to the air is not good. Also, your steering rack busings are probally toast, suggest replacing with energy suspension poly busings. Is your runner in alignment, caster helps the wheels self center. Check the lower/upper ball joints for wear or damage. Basically check and inspect all aspects of the steering system before you spend money. To check the steering rack bushings have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you watch the rack. If it moves more than lets say 1/4", the bushings are gone. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem

I have the same problem, my steering is hard to turn, but my oil level is right. I dun understand if the oil is not leaking what could it be. May be i have to open the steering wheel is self and see if its something there?? i'll keep u posted tomorrow to tell u what i saw under the hood tonight
