Steering Vibration does everyone have it?

Pitbull

In all honesty, I don't know if I had the vibration or not but I think I did, to let you know where Im coming from I had 2 Pathfinders and they had slight vibrations in the wheel and in the gas pedal, nothin that would make you Lemon Law the vehicles but I just accepted it and took it as normal, now when I test drove a V8 Limited 4Runner I did not notice any vibration and then when I bought a V8 Limited from another dealer, it had 3 miles on it when I got it and had no signs of any vibration.

I was already 5000 miles into my 4Runner before I was like alright whats the vibration problem.

Now after several thousand miles, maybe 6-10k and reading owners post on clublexus I looked into the vibration problem further and realized that I to did suffer from the dreaded vibration at certain rpm's but I think I was driving either under the 1700-2500 so called vibration range or above it.

Now at 15k I think it vibrated out, even in my dress shoes I don't feel the pedal or the wheel vibrating and every thursday when Im dressed for my meeting I always take notice on the drive to see if I feel it and for the past several thousand miles it has vanished, from being a dealer tech and just having general knowledge about cars and talking with other techs at the Toy dealers I think the truck just needs time for everything to break in and vibrate out, their are many car related issues that just need some mileage to disappear, on a scale of 1-10, my 4Runner was a 6 or 7 when new, now I can say it's a 10.

Give it time and it will work it's way out, my clunk problem is 90% gone, I've driven more then afew cars, newer cars and noticed vibrations here and their, I had a 2000 GLE Maxima, it always vibrated :D my 03 ES300 has a slight vibration in the wheel similar to the 4Runner, I actually thought all cars had it to some extent, the wheel is attached to the powertrain components.

Im more laid back when it comes to minor issues but it might have something to do with my friends who still insist on driving domestics, I drive my car and just change the oil, my friends are always telling me about the cool cars they just test drove or got as loaners cause their car was in the shop again for repairs, my friends Navigator has had every electrical part replaced and then some but he gets free maintenance and detailing and the dealer treats him well and he loves the LS V8 loaners, my other friend has an Escalade that likes to take rides on the flat bed, the truck is perfect then it just does not start, they get it to the dealer and he gets a call, it's started right up:) the Escalade is on it's 2nd trans cause GM only filled it with half the amount of fluid so he burned it out going up hills:o

The domestics are lacking in build quality but the Lincoln and Caddy dealer really know how to take care of their customers, the caddy dealer here just offered me all included maintenance til 50k, tires for the life of the vehicle, and free oil changes for myself or anyone in my family:)

I know what you mean, my Z had new front tires put on under warranty at 4500 miles. Seems Nissan is having a problem with the OEM tire/alignment/2003 front suspension. They have expanded the 12 month adjustment warranty on the tires to 24 months so the will adjust the alignment and provide new tires for 24 months on the 2003's. Mine now has 6500 miles on the car and 2000 on the new tires and no problems so far but it is something I am watching. A lot of owners are out of their mind mad over the tire issue. I am one that will spend $1000 per year on new tires because I love this Z so much it is real fun and real good looking. The only issue that I found with our 4runners that I think Toyota should address with a TSB/Recall would be the manual seat issue. Like I've stated my steering vibration has gone away.

I've had the 60-60mph vibration of months. I had the dealer rebalance 4 times with little improvment. I though it was the tires but now I see I'm not alone!

I am very senstitive to any kinds abnormalities in my steering wheel and I have felt no vibration. (5k miles).

I've read on the ClubLexus site that the GX470's have this problem as well. But even though there is a TSB for the GX470 it does not seem to fix the problem. I think it is a harmonic's issue and based on the fix it looks like Toyota thinks it is a harmonic's problem. I also don't think it is anything that should concern any of us, other than it being pain it the a$$ if you have it. I am sure Toyota will come up with a fix.

I drove THREE 4 Runners.... Every single one of them had it in the 50-65mph range (give or take). I'd be shocked if one didn't have it. It isn't RPM related though as lower speeds in the 1700 or so RPM give no vibration. Only in the mph range is the problem.

If it is a harmonmics issue and it takes 4 to 5,000 miles for the vibration to become noticeable, it seems that it would continue to get progressively worse. Is this the case? Is it only felt in the steering wheel or does it become great enough to affect the ride, shake the seat-backs, etc?

I had this thread in mind when I drove my 93 Toyota pickup home from work yesterday, and I could feel fluxuating vibrations continuously through the wheel, which of course change depending on engine RPMs, road conditions, etc. I never noticed or thought about it because I guess it never bugged me enough to think something was wrong.

In our V8 4Runner (2500 miles or so) you can feel similar vibrations, though MUCH milder, through the wheel, but hardly anything to be concerned over (unless it gets a lot worse over time).

I'm just wondering what level of "vibration" you guys are talking about, and whether the problem seems to get progressively worse.

Of the three 4 Runners that I drove (including the one i bought) all three had the vibration, all three were brand new with little to no miles on them. So as far as getting worse, I wouldn't think so. One of the three had the vibration so bad that my watch made noise as it bounced around my wrist. The one I bought is very very minor, but noticeable by me. Seems to be around 60mph, but only about a 5mph range up or down from that. It's not nearly bad enough for me to think or worry about it, but the one I drove that was bad would be in the shop right now if I owned it!

The shake I feel is nearly intolerable and the dealer will do another balance on the fronts after they’re rotated. I actually don’t like driving my 4R on the highway because it can get pretty bad.
Mileage: 23K+

3 weeks, 1100 miles on mine, no vibration at any speed up to 90MPH...

Yeah I've had mine since December of 2002. No vibrations at any speed up to...well, when the governor chokes me off.

What OEM tires are you running? Sounds like you might have some broken belts in your tires, if that's the case the only thing you can do is buy new quality tires. The vibration I was talking about is a harmonic at different engine rpm's. It is nothing that would cause shaking like a bad tire.

Not OEM, Toyo Open Country which might be the problem. When I owned a Acura CL I had Toyo T1s and they had a similar problem and no one could balance them either. :(

I think I'll put the Dunlops back on and invest in something better come winter.

This is one problem that my 4runner doesn't seem to demonstrate at this time (knock on wood). Having four TSB problems supposedly resolved this coming week.

2003 Titanium 4X2 limited V8 "rattler"

I test drove a '04 v6 sr5 which did not have the problem.

The next day I drove a '04 v8 sport which did. I (and the salesguy) both attributed it to being so windy. When I got my v8 sport, it did the same thing.

Right around 55-60mph the wheel will shake lightly. Oddly, it doesn't happen all the time. (Same road sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.)

I (cautiously) let go one time and the 4r travels straight even though the wheel is rocking back and forth.

I've found that if I rock the car left-right gently (considering going 60mph) it'll sometimes stop.

All 3 4r had less than 50 miles on them. I'm at 1500 miles and it still happens.

Front end vibrations 2003 Limited V8

According to Toyota's Area (Arizona/New Mexico) the problem is unique to the AWD V8 versions problably starting withe the 03's.
It also existed in the Lexus Gx470's too. It is not a wheel balance problem, but something in the differential assy. Toyota also said there was an angle problem with the front axel assy's
The vibrations appears to be a harmonic vibration starting as low as 22 MPH and about 10 MPH apart up to the worse at around 62 MPH. I have 17,000 miles and it's still there. It appears worse in cold weather and under load. More noticeable when driving uphill.
My last talk with Toyota Customer Relations last week, "The TSB which was to be issued by June 1st has been delayed" "We
are quite aware of the problem and are still working on it!" "Your dealer will notify you when the FIX is available."
I'm becoming impatient!!! dick13

So, those of you who have this vibration/steering wheel problem noticed it from day one, right? In other words, it is not something that developed over time? In 17,000 miles would you say the vibration grows progressively worse or remains the same?
