Stereo and speaker questions.

I recently got a new pop out dvd player stereo for my 98 4runner, but absolutely hate it, for numerous reason. I got it as a gift, but no longer care for it or any stereo that does more than just play my ipod. I dont listen to the radio and dont watch movies on the dvd player, all i care for is my ipod. however, my setup sounds terrible with the stock speakers and this new stereo. I plan on getting a new stereo and speaker setup, and wanted input on YOUR personal preference. I dont care for subwoofers or amps, but I want excellent speakers to make up for not having a subwoofer or amps. Ive seen quite a few people installing the Scion stereo, why? Thanks for your input .

Excellent speakers will sound like garbage running off the deck, they need the power of an external amp to shine. If you want to run speakers off the deck and have them sound good, you're looking for more of an entry level speaker with a high sensitivity rating, so you get good output from lower power levels. The plus side is these speakers are cheaper, the downside is they won't play as loud as better speakers with an amp.

For a deck, check out some of the new Pioneer offerings, the AppRadio2 has just surfaced, and it's designed for use with the Iphone, it's pretty spectacular from the looks of it.
 
Yep, if you want quality sound, you need an external amp with those "excellent" speakers. The amps inside a radio chassis must make compromises that a dedicated external amp does not, and as the power goes up, so does the distortion. If you don't want a sub, get a nice 4-ch. amp (maybe 50W rms x 4) and mount it under a seat. Learn the specs ratings for head units, and check to see that what the iPod section of your proposed radio puts out (not power, but signal, like 20-20k Hz, etc.).

Avoid the app radio it is a piece of junk, buggy, slow and a pain to use. Pioneers new avh models are really good though and have excellent iPod/iPhone connectivity

Get an Alpine Head unit with the V-Drive mini-amp 40W RMS (I think). That setup will be the best you can get without going for a full 4-channel amp.

The SCION head units are a good stock replacement but don't compare to a quality aftermarket deck. I say that simply based on their specs, which are not that great. However, you might not be able to tell the difference.

What type of audiophile are you?

Are you an Infinity Kappas type of person or a Sony Explode type?

Well I have never actually listened to one but like I said before 55db signal to noise does not compare well to the 110db ratio of a Kenwood Excellon.

However many members have installed them and I have never seen any serious complaints. I wish I could compare it in person to my setup. My measurement would not be bass, it would high-mids to highs and listening for static on tracks I know have none.

My take so far

The scion decks are OK. i had a 1808. they offer more power, better ipod connectivity and theyre cheap. Its a plug and play install and on 3Gs they require some console trimming.

Recently switched it out for a JVC KW500 with more power, USB connectivity on the faceplate and RCA amp/sub outs. Im using alpine 600 components up front and alpine 500 coaxial's in back. it sounds good and i really like the sound quality & ease of the USB connection.
 
I hate to break it to ya', Leslie, but you're on a forum for VEHICLES, and this section is for VEHICLE stereos. They've thoughtfully included a section for talking about other things (like computer add-ons) elsewhere--it's called "Off Topic".
