Still trying to understand the oil filter

I don't have my 4Runner yet but have been buying things for it, Wethertech mats, oil but I still don't get the oil filter, why not just a spin on filter. Can some one explain? I just bought a six of them from the dealer. Will be running Mobil 1 in the truck. Even though it is a 10K oil. I still change at 5K, all of my vehicles.

Does the vehicle come with synthetic oil from the factory?

It will come with synthetic oil.
I think the reason for the cartridge style filter is to appease the tree huggers. I normally like to change my own oil... but with these 5th gens I'd rather bring it to a shop.

Oil Filter

I have seen these type filters on other vehicles also, guess it`s cost saving and landfill reduction.

They are a PIA to change and needs 2 tools after you get the skid plate down but I still do my own thanks to Antman`s writeup.

Yeah, I've seen them on other engines also ... Like my 327 Corvette powered
'56 Bel Aire.. First vehicle I ever drove my wife around in.

She married me in spite of it!:thumb3:

No need for 5k oil change. These engines are just fine with 10k between changes. Any more often is not necessary.

Two fun vehicles, one for on road and one for off road. Let`s see the `56 even if you have to include the T4 because this is a T4 section.

I'll have to dig for that!

I know it's here, in a big box of other old photos that are part of a lifetime project. This goes back to about 1968, and we really didn't click until about 2 years later when I was driving a '69 RoadRunner. I never could leave my in-laws house too late because the neighbors would complain about the noise.

My Mother-in-law's funeral was in January, and the old gent that still lives across the road still remembers it!

I'll look for that photo.

It would give the old folks something to talk about besides the weather and news, it would be good for them.

I thought the reason for the cartridge filter was for more capacity. More filter media to trap the junk between 10K oil changes.

That make more sense than anything else considering we've got syn oil that'll go for 10K + miles without an issue.
After looking at the amount of filter element, that was the first and foremost thing that came to mind!

Try changing the oil in the IS300 with the 2JZ motor. Have fun with that oil filter, now that's a PITA.

I'd rather have a good location than a spin on filter.

My '88 Blazer had a superb solution to this ..

A remote filter mounted up high on the inner fender. Unmatched access .. But, Chevrolet, in their never-ending search for quality, made both lines to it constantly weep oil! :gun4::boom:

In my world we spec cartridge style because they will give you a higher dirt holding capacity, can be run at a higher pressure, has better filtration media and is less expensive to replace. What a normal consumer would understand is they are greener. Anyway that's why you spec a cartridge instead of a canister style.

Its not too bad once you do it a couple of times. I don't dread it near like I used to. It is more sketchy trying to get the T4R on the ramps. Using the Fumoto valve makes it nice too.
