Stock wiring type, solid or braided?

At the title states... Does anyone know of the stock wiring if solid or headed off the top of their head? I'm getting ready to wire up a speedometer calibrator and I was going to use some posi taps, but they only work on braided wire.

Also... 18-22 AWG is the average for the wiring in the cab right?

Just wanted to make sure I am ready before I start cutting crap and can't get it back together...

Solid wiring should never be used in an environment where there is vibration. All of the wiring in the truck is stranded.

Yes not only stranded but copper as well. The gauge of wire vary on different circuits.


Newer vehicles may have aluminum wire along with alot more variance of the wire gauges as well.

I highly doubt you'll ever find aluminum wiring in a car for the same reason you won't find solid wire, they tend to work-harden when flexed, and then break. It's a fire hazard as well as causing issues with function.

I been finding it alot of things that you wouldnt think you would lately. Lots of light assembly have stranded aluminum wire in them for cars.

I not disagreeing that it's an extremely bad idea. However, aluminum is a lot cheaper then copper and its creeping into a pile of things that it should not be in.


I will verify if it's the new cars. I thought my one buddy ran into it.

I dont think you ever find solid wire but the newer vehicles use the smallest gauge of wire they can get away with so the sizes of the wire gauges in vehicles is alot more then the older rides

Phew awesome. Thanks guys, I always make sure to use pure copper wire as well. No aluminum or that CCA nonsense.
