Strange rear wiper issue

same symptoms here. 2006 ltd, 179k miles, original battery. always happens on morning start ups and the battery strains. new battery, problem solved this morning. engine cranks over with vigor. rear wiper does not cycle. Jason

I'll see if I can dig up anything in the service literature to back-up that this is an indication of a failing battery, could be useful for future owners.

Did you ever find anything documented on this?

Two days ago I noticed that the battery was starting to show signs of weakness. Yesterday the rear wiper started a single swipe on every startup.

Interesting...I had the problem with the original Panasonic battery where the truck wouldn't start one day, then it'd work great for a week, then die all of the sudden again. I ended up replacing the battery and haven't had an issue since but I don't recall a rear wiper sweep on start-up. Maybe it didn't get low enough.

I read this thread yesterday because for the past couple of weeks my rear wiper came on every time we started the 2006 four runner. We also thought it was funny that people would blame the battery, until we got ready to leave today and the car battery was dead. It was the original battery and when we changed it, guess what? The wiper didn't turn on when we started it up. Around the same time that the wiper started up, the low tire light started blinking and we were hoping that would stop too, but it didn't.

So put air in the tires.
 
mine has started to do this.. i hope its not time for a new battery,
i was saving for other stuff:redbrick:
 
Mine did this about a month ago. Result after a couple weeks: dead battery.
It has not happened since the new battery installation.
 
so today, after few weeks of weird wiper issue,
i went to start her up, and she just did some clicking,
im guessing i need to buy a new batter:dammit:
 
Mine has started doing this too every once in a while…I thought it was just some strange phenomenon but I guess I better start budgeting for a battery. Any recommendations?
 
Welp, add yet another mystery problem to the list of issues I've been able to solve using this site. A couple of weeks ago we got our first cold weather here in the Northeast and I noticed a slight hesitation when I started my truck one morning; nothing drastic, but it took a little longer than usual and the started sounded like it was turning more slowly.

Over the past couple of days I've noticed that my rear wiper was making one single pass over the rear window at startup even though it was in the "off" position.

Looks like I'm heading to Sears this afternoon to get a new battery.
 
In case anyone else needs to hear it happens to someone else mine does it too. Im on my same 2007 battery and it has a cracked case so the battery issue makes total sense. I guess since its getting cold now i need to go ahead and bite the bullet for a new battery. I was thinking to myself for the last month or so that i know that wiper hasn't done that the whole time I have had the car. What is up with that.

Because of this forum I've learned a lot about our T4Rs. The last time I got an oil change (and the time before that) they told me my battery needed to be replaced. I decided not to replace it because there were no hesitations starting the engine. I was on the original Panasonic battery until I started it up on Saturday and noticed the rear wipe cycle once. I immediately went to the dealership and put a new battery in myself in their driveway. First crank and the rear wiper single cycle stopped!
 
Older thread, but here's my twist to this problem:

I had the single swipe / rear wiper issue thing going on, and I replaced my battery ...

but now when I turn the rear wiper switch on, the wiper doesn't work at all anymore

Anyone else ?

Normalize your rear window and make sure it's all of the way up and try again. You will also have to normalize your driver's window and sunroof.
 
Mine just started doing this today. I'm noticing it's taking a little longer to start as well. I replaced the battery just 2 years ago, but it was just a walmart special. I will get it swapped out. Thanks for the details on what it is.
