One press turns TRAC OFF - Pressing and holding for 3 sec turns off BOTH TRAC and VSC.

Now, keep in mind that when you hit a certain speed (35 maybe, I tested and forgot now) TRAC will turn itself back ON. I have not tested the speed reactivation with both TRAC a& VSC off yet though.

It is possible that as you crossed the ruts if the 4R was sliding around a bit vs the wheel position that VSC could have activated, probably a low possibility but make sure to turn both off next time just make sure.

He's totally right!He ACTUALLY owns one and it's in the manual.
One touch turns TRAC off or hold it for 3 seconds and turns TRAC and VSC off.On the Limited the switch is on the overhead,all the way to the left and the symbol looks like a vehicle with squiggly skid marks behind it. You'll get lights on the dash meaning they are off.

Not to beat a dead horse. But pushing said button once turns off VSC. Holding turns off TRAC.

VSC might turn itself back on. I don't think I've ever just turned that off by itself.

Ryan - Please see above - you are confused - One press is TRAC - Press & Hold is TRAC & VSC - like Harper said, in the manual. Try it for yourself, press it once and tell me what light pops up on the dash.

Westwind, you sure are a trigger happy person. Let's not bust out the exclamation marks and get overly excited here.

Based on my 1st generation and 2nd generation of offroad electronic traction goodies, the 2002 3rd Gen 4Runners when AWD is engaged, one push of the car squigly thingamajigger switch locks the CDL and turns off VSC. The TRAC stays on to slow spinning wheels to simulate electronic limited slip diff.

Now, on my old FJ-Cruiser, since it only had part time 4WD, you shift the lever into 4hi, it disconnects VSC, the thing that keeps your vehicle from spinning out by killing throttle, but the traction control device is still active but isn't aggressive. One push of the A-TRAC button turns on the super aggressive traction controlling device that simulates an aggressive LSD.

Did Toyota do something different on the 4Runners? I'm not sure, but those who understand Toyota's traction control goodies from older Toyota's and use their 5th gen 4Runner offroad more than the average joe, please step in.

Lets come down to an aggreement here, regardless on whats switching stuff on and off. The grinding noise the O/P heard wasn't a malfunction and indeed was a normal function from the ABS pump activating an electronin Limited Slip function. Aggreed??? Or would you guys rather turn this into a pissing contest?

Nope, just making sure mis-information does not populate the forum is all. Besides, if I'm not mistake you were the one who started this 'conversation' anyway disagreeing with an actual 5th gen owner on how their vehicle works. I would agree though, whatever the OP heard was most likely a normal function of the vehicle and one of its systems, they just have to narrow down which one.
