Street's '98 Build-up Thread

Went to do the "bump-the-starter" method earlier today and the battery died the second I turned the key.. I guess that's what you get when you have a ****ty battery that doesn't get charge because the engine doesn't run lol.

Anyways so until I charge up the battery this is how the engine sits:

After running into this problem I decided to start pulling panels and getting at the e-locker wiring. From what I can see it looks like it is going to be a bit more difficult than I was expecting because so much of the wiring is intermingled with all the other wiring, especially near the ECU.

Also, I am having trouble figuring out where the wiring for the button goes because it seems to just go up past the cross bar and I can't follow it.

I am also frustrated by the fact that I found two different wires that are attached to nothing.

This one seems to be a ground wire for something:

and this one is attached to what looks to be part of the steering column:

I'll probably just check out my '98 and see where those should be and figure out exactly what is needed in the wiring harness swap.

Fun, fun, fun..

Got my Camshaft pulley tool, should be getting the 2000 running tomorrow!

Once that's done I'll drive her over to the house and put her in the garage. Will pull the rear axle and front diff and continue working on the wiring.

Anybody know if the dash in my '98 has the RR DIFF LOCK light in it? According to all the research I've done it should. Makes sense because it be easier for Toyota to make one type of dash rather than multiples.

Some of the plans:

-Strip all the rust from the rear axle and paint it up.
-Pull the axle shafts out and get new hardware installed(already have all the -new barrings, spacers, etc.).
-Also have new shoes and drums ready to install.
-Will also be re-painting all my control arms/links as well as cleaning up any
other rust spots.
-Install my new Marlin Crawler diff lock actuator skid :D

Anything else I should do?

My 97 had the RR Diff Lock in the cluster overlay but there wasn't any wire (or if I recall the circuit board for the cluster didn't have any copper path) or a light bulb to illuminate. So I bought a light bulb socket and cut it open and ran wires to the locker ECU. Now it looks factory.

Man you are really putting some work into this one. You will be very happy when its out on the trail. Nice work on the side liner.

Great! I hope it's there, I don't mind having to add a bulb or wiring.

Thanks Driffter. Building her new piece by piece :D Plan on keeping her till I die, that's right, Until I die.

I can't wait until I have the basically new axle in with fresh brakes. I'm basically riding on just front brakes right now. It will be so awesome, especially once i do the Tundra conversion up front as well. I'll be stopping like a sports car in comparison to how it is now.

Got the 2000 purring like a kitten :D

Still a little roughness hear and there but she is running great and after driving around a bit I'm sure it will get even better.

Just need to order a couple of sensors to get the "stuck in 4wd" problem fixed. Until then I am just leaving the front drive shaft disconnected. I'm getting a little bit of a whine from the transfer case because it thinks it's in 4wd but other than that..

Good stuff.

I had a "moment of truth" video I was going to post up but was too excited and left my camera at the other house.. lol :driving:

Also, this was just a test using a non-OEM t-belt and extra parts from my bros T4R (he has lots of parts because he has been rebuilding). Now that I know it works I will be doing this all over again with new OEM parts.

So we got our first decent snow this weekend here in Michigan...

Brother decided to have some fun and relieve some stress by taking his '96 down a short trail with a turnaround...

Went to turn around and do a little donut in this turn around, front wheels didn't grab and he slid into a tree dead center of his front end...

Pushed in all the way to the radiator, cross mounts are all bent...

So for now I'm going to put my projects on hold and work on getting his fixed up and going again. Hopefully nothing worse than replacing some stuff (bumper, hood, grille, etc.) and bending those cross mounts back into place (adding some support as well).

Money is tight for him already right now. So if anyone has any of the following they wouldn't mind letting go for cheap let me know:

-Chrome bumper(if its cheap enough, otherwise he can use the grey one from my '98)
-Grille
-Hood
-Radiator(low miles) His is a manual but an auto rad. will work

I'll update the list as we come up with more things needed.

So the new parts have been piling up lately and will probably continue to pile up for a while because I have made a change in plans.

I have pretty much decided that I will sell the 2000, possibly with the e-locker, and hopefully get the '90 out of here and then with that money(and some extra) I will find another 3rd gen with low miles. I want an upgrade!

I will have a few specifications to meet when I make the purchase. It must have low miles(less than 150k), an E-locker, have been well maintained, and have tan interior(if it has leather I will be swapping with the clothe seats in my '98, I hate leather). Some other things that would be nice if i can find it all in one package would be if it had a sport hood and was the same color of my '98.

When I get it and swap the things I want to swap from my '98 I will sell the '98:sobbing: So for now I am going to keep most of those parts piled up waiting to be installed on whatever new 3rd gen I get.

I may even look for one out of state (down south or out west) so I can start over with one that has little-no rust. If you guys down in Florida or over In CA find one that meets my requirements let me know :D

Here are some pics of my brothers '96 after he went tree hugging:

Ah man, she's bleeding all over the place!!!!

Just replace the radiator with a new koyo, then bash out the hood, bumper and grille. It will look like crap, but it will run. I assume the condenser is toast too? Are those as cheap as the radiators are? I guess he won't need it in the winter, but eventually he will want it.

Definitely look down south. The cost of a plane ticket down to pick it up is worth it for rust-free goodness. I should have done that.

Yea we aren't putting her down yet. That right there has been in our family since it's beginning and is the one that sparked my love for T4rs. We will get her going and looking pretty again soon enough. When it's really time to say goodbye it will be turned into living room furniture :D

I have a set of Grandparents down in Florida which I'm sure wouldn't mind me visiting again, and grew up in Salinas CA, so pretty much the rest of my family is there. I'm sure I could get my grandparents in either state to buy me a plane ticket.

Hey man, it's been a while. How are the 4R's doing?

I like looking at the earlier pics... weird to think that the parts in those photos are on my truck lol

4runners are doing pretty good. Still need to paint my budbuilts and sliders and get those on. My brothers '96 is back in running order. Working on getting a new hood and stuff. My father and lil' brother gave the 2000 a bath for me on my B-day. She looks great!

I hope you are enjoying those flares!

oh yea.. I have some "trail" damage on my drivers side fender. GFs mom decided to floor it when she was stuck in snow in her JEEP! got some traction and when right into me. Not to bad though, just a chance to work on my body work skills. :D

Time for an update.

In the past few months I have changed timing belt, water pump, and all other belts. I also swapped my PS pump for one with only 90k miles on it. No more whining from it. My budbuilts skids(front and belly) are bedlined and ready to install.

I painted my sliders a few weeks ago but finally had time to get them mounted up.

Tomorrow I will be swapping out my CVs that have torn boots for a set I bought used with only 90k miles on them, as well as swapping in new OEM LBJs. Will also try to get my budbuilts mounted.

Possibly going to throw some new rubber on her as well by the end of the week. Just need to decide between 285/75s and 255/85s. Leaning towards the 255/85s since they are cheaper.

New rubber! Also put some clear indicator lenses on, as well as the CVs swapped. Have wheels spacers, hi-lift, and a couple smaller things coming in the mail.

Got spacers on the front, thinking of leaving them off the back. Should have some flex shots with the KM2s pretty soon. Changed trans fluid, oil, and front diff.

If time permits I'll finally be swapping axles with my '00. E-LOCKER!

Still have all my new axle hardware(barrings, seals, e-locker guard, etc.) ready to go on after the swap.
New rear brake drums, shoes, etc. are still waiting to go on and I will be ordering stuff for the 231mm tundra upgrade in the front.

I can't wait!

Progress on the axle swap has been made! I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Also got a new set of wheels. Just need to throw some duratracs on them.

Should be taking the shafts in to have all my new hardware put on them pretty soon. Once that's done I'll be pulling the '98s rear out and bolting the e-locker up with new shoes and drums as well. Then all that will be left is swapping front diffs and getting the locker wired up. Since I have the ECU and switch(actually have 3 of them..) I'll just be running wires between them.

Should be taking the axle shafts in to have all new barrings and such put on tomorrow. Already have all the new parts just need to take them in. Will be installing new shoes and drums when I get the shafts back. Then hopefully if I can get enough work done this weekend I'll be able to swap it into my '98 as well as the front diff.

Just ordered everything for my 231mm Tundra brake upgrade including extended brake lines front and rear(long overdue).

My neighbor made a comment to me the other day about how I'm always working on my 4runners and made a joke about how toyotas are supposed to never brake; "I thought that was why you buy these things?". I told him I only work on my 4runners when I want to :D I work on them for fun, not necessity.
