Stripped Engine Cover Stud - 2006 4.0L

Hi everyone,

I recently tried to remove my plastic engine cover on my new to me 2006 SR5 V6 and I noticed that the nut/stud on the driver’s side was stripped. The previous owner must have really torqued this thing down. It looks like the anchor/spline that holds the stud in place in the plastic intake assembly is stripped. Any ideas on a good way to remove the nut or remove the stud? I was thinking I might grind off the top of the nut so I can get some vice grips on the stud and loosen the nut. Since the stud is loose I thought I could just pull the stud and nut out together and then loosen it but it won’t budge. If I ever get it loose I guess I’ll have to epoxy the stud back in place. Does anyone have a part number for the nut or stud. Anyone run into this issue as well? Any help or advice would be a huge help! Thanks!

Personally, my engine cover was off for some odd reason, I think my WP/radiator/idler replacement project. Anyway I drove the truck for a couple days without the cover on. One of my stud's just fell out. I removed everything carefully and when driving it the stud vanished. So personally, I use one stud to hold the cover on now. It works fine. If I ever aimed to fix it or in your case, I'd pull on the nut with some vice grips. Get it to let go of the stud and nut in one motion. I didn't look but it seemed they just press in I'm assuming. So that should make quick work of the removal an then you can use a combination of vice grips an socket to save the stud an epoxy it back in.

It helps combat the drivers side lean if you remove the drivers side stud an leave it out. :lmao:

Any chance you could post a picture of the area with the stud removed? I'm curious to see exactly how that think is captured in there. I've pulled on it pretty hard a few times, but no luck. Thanks for the help!

Mine stripped on mine also (V8) if I remember correctly I fixed it by grinding down the head of the stud, then punched it out with a hammer and I now have a bolt and nut in that one side.

You could always just remove the cover completely and leave it off. It’s only a cosmetic item.
