Stronger/ better pro rack crossbars recommendations

I'm curious about this too. I waffle about whether I like the looks of this rack. I'm going to hang onto it for now, but I've been looking for other crossbar options and am not finding anything. The only aftermarket option I can find at all is Baja's drop-in basket for the Pro rack, but there aren't any crossbar options for that either, so I don't know where that gets us.
EDIT: Although Baja does offer brackets that let you attach ski/cargo boxes to the basket, which is primarily what I use the crossbars for, so I'm considering that. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much discussion about these, so I'm not sure how well they work.

Suggestion: Buy some more bars; you will have more bars to hold the load. There is room for two or three more, plus you can put bars on the top rail to form a basket of sorts.
I purchased two more OEM bars just a couple weeks ago from parts.toyota.com, part number PT27889190CB. The price is often discounted and there is free shipping to your local Toyota dealer.
The OEM cross bars were unavailable for the longest time, but are now available.
Another thought: I was concerned that the thumb wheels for the TRD Pro rack may come loose and get lost. The 4Runner TRD rack uses the same thumb wheels as the FJ Cruiser rack, part number PT278-35140-TW. I purchase several as spares and put them in my center console.
I have never had a problem with the plastic end caps on the cross bars (breaking, etc), but then I have not used my roof rack a lot.

Has this been an issue — the thumb wheels coming loose? That hadn’t occurred to me.

I have seen the basket from Baja for only 20lb more weight allowed
i have the rack and was thinking about getting 1 extra cross bar, i have had no issues with the bars or plastic ends as long as you are not constantly moving them around set them where you like and leave them alone i only change the location once or twice that's why might get the extra bar

I have used the stock Pro rack for all sorts of things with no issues at all// big ski box filled with skis, camping equipment, built a plywood deck up there so my 3 kids could watch a movie at a drive in from the roof... no problems, no cracking, no bending, no thumb screws coming loose... that rack it more robust than it seems... it was designed with a pretty hefty safety factor, I would bet...

Baja basket has an advertised 200 lb load capacity, which I believe is double what Toyota advises on the stock parts (I assume they mean the crossbars).

Yeah the issue I have is I’m constantly moving things and the flex on the bars scares me a little the plastic clamps don’t inspire confidence I was hoping someone found a solution other then dropping in a basket or replacing it all together :rockthrow:
I want to keep it but looking at a stronger clamp/bar setup

I wonder if there would be a way to get Thule or Yakima crossbars to work -- maybe one of the lower profile models so as not to add even more height to the rack.
They are Yakima cross bars. Yakima makes all the toyota accessories. Even our Pro Rack...
Not an issue; I have never had a thumb wheel come loose. I just wanted to be prepared if one did come loose.

I ordered 2 of these as well. One fit and one was two long. The one that fit has screw holes that are 32” apart. The one that didn’t fit was 3.5” longer between the screw holes. I called Toyota and they ordered me another but it is also 3.5” longer than the bar that fits. Anyone know why this would be? This is what I ordered: PT278-89190-CB.

If I could get LFD style crossbars for the Pro rack, I would buy 8 of them tonight. Might be worth trying to find someone local to fabricate something like that.
