Tension bolt will not align as shown in pictures. I do not have any clue how this happened and why it will not seat properly.

I broke the original and a brand new one. I am on my third and I now see my problem.

Apology for newbie mobile user.

Thanks for any help.

If the stud for the tensioner is inserted all the way into the lower alt hole the tensioner should be aligned. Shut up the stud to ensure its seated all the way.

Stud is all the way towards "u-shape slot". The tension bolt is resting in the pictures. When I "force" the bolt down, the alternator does not move easily, nor does the pulley. The bracket is flush with alternator mount and belt is not taught, but no where near anything I would "just tighten" and call it good. Too much slop in belt.

That's was why I cannot just fit it down.

So you have the nut on the front side of that stud the adjuster threads through?

What if you try to loosen the alt mounting bolts and wiggle the alt around until you would get the stud to fit
i would pull my alt all the way up and tighten the bolts accordingly while still holding the alt in place

Bracket looks bent. How did you break 2 bolts that are just meant to put tension on a belt?

Make sure those threads are nice and clean with some PB blaster or WD-40. I've never heard of a tensioner bolt breaking.

Good luck man.

I had to remove my tensioner and hear it and soak it. Then I got the bolt out and ran a tap through it. Now after the alternator change it spins with your fingers.

The main bolt that holds the alt to the 'block' is fixed, no way to wiggle "to and fro". Side to side is possible but that just loosens and tightens slack on belt.

That is what I thought, but the bracket is up against the bottom mount for the stud/tensioner. The bracket may be 2mm off but the tension bolt is 5-7mm off.

I broke bolt by over-tightening because the angle is too severe and gave. I realized the the angle how it sits (as shown in photos) after I broke the second. Bolt is threaded and resting. All is only finger tight which still is not much. Pushing the tension bolt down creates a harsh angle on that joint. I have no idea how the tension bolt does not align. How did the bracket move that small amount?

How the bracket bent in the first place? If I find that answer, I might be able to fix. Or why all of it lines up fine yet the tension bolt is the only thing not lining up.

I'm totally baffled. Granted I am no mechanic, This is my first post(s) because I use this site and have gotten all my answers without posting questions. Love you guys!!! First used this site in 2012 under similar handle.

With this issue I am ??? wtf did I do wrong ???

Update

Photo is sideways, sorry. I was able to bend the bracket back to get the tension bolt to set in groove. Hand tightened and was good to go. Upon ratcheting down and tightening, the tension bolt is visibly bent. There is still slack in belt. Battery volt tested at 13.8-14.1.

This is where I am stuck. I do not wish to tighten any further, but the belt needs.

Wuddya think?

Is that a new alternator, looks pretty clean in the pics. Probably a long shot but it may be the wrong alternator.

I agree with Jon. It looks like the bracket is bent, and needs to be straightened.

Given you probably don't have high heat (oxy/ace), if you take off the bracket, and put it in a vice, you may be able to beat it in order to straighten it.

If not, see if a junkyard near you may have a used one: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market.
