Stupid Clock

I have never had my clock work in the 6 years I have owned the 4runner. I have followed the diy clock fix twice with no luck at all. I got a clock from a friend parting out a truck who said it was working when he drove it recently. Plugged it in and no luck. Check the voltage and I was getting power on both the blue and grey power leads when on and just the grey with the key off. The green ground always worked but the white ground did not, I spliced a ground to it and now it works as it should. Plugged in the clock and nothing. Are these clocks that sensitive? I am wondering if I blew up both clocks because the one ground was not working. Becoming kind of obsessed with getting it working

there garbage. on my third. last two from junk yard though. but still, i had to replace one in my mother's 4runner as well. 5 clocks on two runners...

Mine comes on intermittently. I just look at time on my stereo and not bother fixing it.

Thanks, I know they have issues I just get frustrated that I can't fix a dumb clock with 4 wires attached to it. Guess I will look for another one

I took mine apart and the way it's put together the connections go bad. Plus mine has soda goo inside. Cleaned up everything and resoldered stuff and it's good to go.

Mine stopped working a decade ago. I put a smartphone mount in front of it so I don't miss it. But if it gets REALLY cold, like below 10°F, it starts working. Go figure.

My clock didnt work when I bought my truck. I followed the clock fix thread and soldered the metal connections to the PCB and threw out the springs. The clock worked for a day and then stopped.
Later down in the same thread someone mentioned going over the resistors on the PCB with some fresh solder. I did that and my clock has worked ever since without any issues. Have you guys tried adding fresh solder to the resistors?

Previous owner of my rig just ripped the clock out.. so all I had was a hole there, lol. I installed a digital Voltmeter in its place.

It still fools my wife whenever she's in the truck with me.. she always thinks its' 1:39 - 1:41 lol. No dear, that's 14.1 V.

Plan was to install an aftermarket deck that has a clock on its display, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. Still rockin' the factory system. So no clock in my rig.

This guy fixed mine like a champ. $16 and it works perfectly. Simply pull it out and buy this off ebay and ship it to him. He ships it back fixed perfectly packages and a 5 year warranty.

Took a stab at soldering the pins to the clock today. Didnt work. 5 stages of grief ensued. Re read the "clock fix" thread. I decided to "re-flow" some solder on all the big resisters and just for the hell of it I put a little bit of fresh solder on the tiny resistors as well. Clock is now working. I actually managed to over heat one of the pins to point of the copper pad lifting then breaking. I used some copper wire to bypass the gap to the resistor and now all is well. We will see how long it lasts.

Soldering those pins is a total pain! At least adding solder to the resistors cured the clock problem by the sounds of it. Maybe that little bit copper bypass will hold out for years. Heres to hoping.

I found that getting the 1st pin soldered and aligned enabled me to align the others using a medium binder clip. Made the task much less frustrating.

Someone here pulled the gots out his and mounted a clock, temp, and voltmeter display inside the housing. It looked good. I think I found the clock he used on Amazon.

....and stupid in-dash cup holder

I keep trying to think up some clever idea to replace both the clock and the in-dash cup holder with some sort of gadget mod. So far I've got nothing... Anyone had any thoughts? I mean the clock just isn't necessary (even if it still works) and the cup holder is abysmal.

Just something I noticed, but 1996 4Runners I see used usually have working clocks.

I have pulled the original clock apart twice and soldered it. I am pretty sure my problem was the lack of ground on the ignition powered leg was blowing something on the board. I will pull it apart again and take a good look. A member on this forum was very helpful in sending me another clock (thanks Nissan) so I am hoping three times is a charm. I probably have spent more time trying to get the stupid clock to work than I have on most other mods to the Runner!

I think I saw something about there being multiple clock suppliers. No idea. I've seen a 1996 with a dead clock here and there too, but way less than other years.

I finally have a working clock! Took too much effort and energy but it works. Thanks again to nissanh for sending me a working one. For those interested the white/black ground wire was not working so I would blow out the clock as soon as it went in. You can see on the two displays the burn mark in almost the same place. One is my original clock which no amount of my crappy soldering was going to fix and the other is a used one I put in last week
