Stupid hazard switch backlight question

I've owned a few 3rd gens and so far (none newer than 1998), from what I recall, none has had a hazard light switch that illuminates via backlight when you turn the headlights on. Was this ever a feature pre-'99? And if so, is there a way to change the bulb within the switch to restore the function?

Reason being, none of the people around here know how to drive, and I've been rear ended (not serious) and almost rear ended a few times on the highway in the past 2 - 3 weeks because the inattentive f*ckwit person behind me is too busy snapchatting the faceballs and doesn't realize I'm slowing for traffic. Usually at night. And when it's dark I can't easily see where the hazard light switch is without a back light, and end up punching my clock and the surrounding area until the lights come on. I figure a backlight for the switch would help acquire the target in my periphery without taking my eyes off the road.

Anyway, I figure flashing hazard lights might get the attention of the people behind me better than the three freaking brake lights the car was equipped with from the factory, that all work FYI.

Can someone with a 96-98 4Runner just turn on your headlights at night and tell me whether or not your hazard light switch is backlit?

Pulled the switch from my parts truck, has a small dash-style bulb in it that's removable / replaceable. Likely every one in all of the 3rd gens I've had thus far has been burned out.

I can't help with the hazard light as mine is away in storage for the winter but...

Why not consider a 3rd brake light flasher? Brake Light Flasher - Flashing Brake Light at 3rd Brake Flasher

I'm not sure of the legalities of them but they are pretty cool. I often see motorcycles with flashing LEDs on the rear so searching for those that lead me to this product.

I've had one for 2 winters now, I'm happy with it. I figure it can't hurt. I bought the fancy brake force one but in the end I disabled that feature and I just use it to flash the 3rd light quickly 5-6 times then go solid. Very easy to install but kind of hard to program.

Yup, it's backlit, i just went out and checked mine and the triangle glows orange when the markers are turned on.

Yup, it's backlit, i just went out and checked mine and the triangle glows orange when the markers are turned on.

I found the bulb in the switch from my parts truck, so it basically means that every one of my 3rd gens has had burned out backlight bulbs for those switches. Thanks for checking. Next time I pull that center bezel (to hard-mount my CB, probably) I'll replace those bulbs. Thanks.

That's a fantastic idea. Why did you disable the accelerometer function, out of curiosity?

Just because in order to use that function you have to be particular about mounting orientation of the unit. I tucked mine in the cavity behind the 3rd brake light and there is a lack of nice level mounting spots.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and have been recently trying to rebuilt the interior on my 98 SR5. It has got the defrost switch, hazard switch, and the clock all burnt out over the years of use. I have successfully found replacement defrost switch and clock on eBay that work (meaning they light up with headlights on), yet the hazard switch I bought from eBay did not light up. I consider myself unlucky, so I try to get the light bulbs inside the switch instead. I found a Honda light bulb that look similar, but today when they arrived I found that the bulb is too small to fit into the switch housing.

So, does anyone know how to get the light bulb separately? Or do I have to buy the whole switch, which would be the third switch in my possession. Part number would be nice since I had no luck searching the Toyota parts page.

Trying to rebuild my interior lighting on my new 1996 as well. Any tips on how to pull out the hazard switch? I've got the electrical connector out but can't get the switch out of the console.

It's been a while since I worked on mine, but on my 2000, that bulb is a Neo wedge, I'm pretty sure it was a T3, but it might have been a T4. Because of the location and direction of the light inside the switch, don't use an LED with a single led on the top or it will barely illuminate the switch. It's best to just use an incandescent, but I've seen more expensive Neo wedge LED's that have LED's pointing in multiple directions that might work if you really want to try it. This is the style I tried as a replacement before I went back to the original because it didn't properly illuminate the switch. It fit fine, so that is the base style you are looking for assuming the bulb is the same on yours as it is on a 2000.
