Stupid windshield

Jump in the 4Runner and look at the passenger side window to see a nice 4" crack from a rock chip. 2100 miles and the windshield is screwed. Happy new year to me. Anyone else got me beat on how quick they cracked their windshield?

Yes, I understand that the rock catcher (aka windshield) is angled in a way that this will continue to happen. Just ranting and wanting to see if anyone else had to replace their windshield quicker than me.

The first windshield replacement on my wife's was under 1K miles and the 2nd was under 10K miles. I25 between our house in Denver is hard on windshields. 2 in her 4Runner and 1 on my FJ within the last year.
 
Bought my 14 in May. 1st road trip in June. Less than 1k miles had big rock chip on drivers side. Was able to get it repaired with no further cracking yet.
 
What are some of the costs you guys are paying to replace your windshield? I have a small chip in mine and am dreading the day it cracks.
 
Had a friend who had just picked up his replaced windshield truck at the shop and yep, on the way home on the freeway another rock hit it and cracked again.
Can't beat the OP but, I had my 4runners replaced at 15K from rock damage. Took the hit 50 miles from home as I was returning from a 3700 mile road trip. At least I didn't have to look at the crack the whole trip. Why is it always right in the drivers line of sight?
 
Is the glass in these trucks just substandard or is it the angle of the windshield that causes this in these trucks?

The factory glass is good, it is just at a bad angle. Just be glad you don't have a FJ Cruiser....

On top of that, people will usually go with the cheapest option for replacing their glass, which is substandard and more prone to cracking.
 
Id bet these windshields crack less than Wranglers since its an angle issue. Its hard to find a Wrangler windshield that isnt either currently cracked or was at some point and has been replaced.

From what I have been told by my insurance company and others is that when you get a chip get it repaired immediately. It will greatly reduce the chance of it developing into a crack. All the chips I have ever had repaired have not turned into a crack. The repair service is free with my insurance company. It saves them from having to replace as many windshields.
 
I was quoted $475 today to fix mine, even with the wiper heater. A guy I work with had to replace his 13' windshield and it cost $1200, I'm assuming he got factory glass but his insurance paid in full.

I'll be replacing it AFTER my move to Maine in May/June. No sense in replacing it when it'll get chewed up on the cross country trip.

Good call. There is a local glass place that my wife has gone to in the past for that. I should hit them up.
 
$1200 for OEM glass? That's crazy. I paid $295 at Safelite a few months ago (2014 windshield with the wiper defroster). The difference in quality is only noticeable if you put your face right on the glass and try to look through it sideways. Then, and only then, will it look slightly wavy.

My wife busted the glass on the way to return a new car she decided not to buy.
My 4Runner lasted about 5k before the first major crack. Around 2k for first chip. Thereafter, nothing. Glass quotes are around $220 without heated wiper deal and $270 with. I don't need the heated wiper thingy but I'm conflicted (this is common for everyone I've talked to about replacing the front glass -- they get heated wiper deal and then regret it).

You're in Louisiana, you need a heated windshield just like you need a heated shifter knob lol.

Also sounds like I need to find a cheaper glass place.

I ended up having to replace mine due to a rock after FOUR days of owner ship. My insurance company ended up taking care of it but it was about a $1375 claim for OEM glass. The replacement windshield has a few chips in it as well.
