So I know there have been a few threads about sub enclosures, but they all seem to be outdated. Looking to put a 10" shallow sub in the back in an enclosure that won't affect the 3rd row seats folding up. Has anyone had this done, or any plans? The sub is a JL that only requires 0.65 cubic feet sealed. Thanks.

I've used a version of JL's powerwedge in numerous applications including a couple 4th gens. The 10" fills the 4Runner nicely, not neighborhood ghost ridin' bass but full punchy notes. They have a 12" version too if you require more boom.

So did you just have this sandwiched in the back between the back of the third row seats and the hatch? Seems like a really tight fit and the sub would be facing right against the tailgate, cause it to not sound good and rattle.
Here are some pics of the space. Thinking of doing a custom built box that wraps up over the storage part on the side.

Sorry....I meant to link you the powerwedge Max sub with the amp attached to the back. Very slim and the wedge shape fits against the back seat perfectly.

This is my solution for something that will fit behind the third row, hold a sub, and hold tools. I originally wanted it for an 8" or 10" sub but I got a 12" for free so in it went. Works great and uses the existing tie downs to keep it secure.

I never had the 3rd row. Look at the specs...it's 11" deep. That's a small footprint that will deliver WAY better than the kicker hideaway (I had this too). It will not be sandwiched.

So I'm assuming you scoot it back when you put the third row seats up? So that would place the enclosure right up against the door. So does that create any issues?

That is how I normally build sub enclosures (pic included to show my design). I do this mainly to protect the speaker. I have a 15 JLw0 that was in my 3rd gen that I have not yet put into my 5th gen that is built this way. But after looking at the amount of space that is left with the 3rd row up I would have to think a sub like [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] put under the driver seat might be better. Another option for limited space if you wanted to put the speaker back there is a bazooka tube.

The pic with the tailgate closed helps a lot. It looks like there is enough room in there to fit a wedge shape box in there. As for suggestions on box construction see if you can recess the panel that the sub is mounted on by at least the amount of deflection produced by the sub when on i.e. 3/4"-1" and face it towards the front. I built a box for a 10" for a friend with a pre-tacoma regular cab and he was 6'3" so I am sure you can make it work.
Are you saying to have the sub placed in the angled portion of the box facing forward and have at least a 1" gap between the back of the seat and the speaker?

Does anyone know how hard it is to cut-out/remove the storage bin on the passenger side? What is behind it if you cut it out?

Yes. Leave the sides, top and bottom flush with the back of the seat and recess the panel with the speaker. This is just a thought btw only the tape measure and calculator will determine if it will work.
So on JL's website, they recommenrecommend an enclosure that is 9" deep. However, the mounting depth for the sub is 4.9" so technically couldn't I get away with 6"? Or is it bad to run that shallow of a box. Have a buddy that will do an install and said he can build a custom box. Just trying to get some ideas.

Makes no difference if it isn't a vented pole ie there isn't a cooling port in the magnet. If there is you need an inch or so for air to move through. They say more but I haven't ever had a problem.
Thanks for the response. There is a hole at the bottom, so I would need the 4.9" mounting depth plus 1" clearance plus 3/4" thickness would be about 7". I think that could work, even fitting on the side next to the third row seat folded up. Just worry about putting it at the back and the ease of loading and unloading items being effected.
Anyone have any experience with cutting into the side plastic storage areas in the back? Just wondering if that's an option and putting the MDF box there.
