Subs and Amp....help needed...

So I have a 2000 runner with stock speakers, and a Pioneer HU...I was wanting to buy some subs, but don't know what the best set up would be. My brother has a WRX and has dual 12" subs in the trunk, and they hit really hard. Whats the best set up for a 4runner with it all being open space. Single? Dual? 10" 12"? I'm also a little tight on money, so if anyone has any suggestions on subs and amp for reasonable price, but decent sound quality. I know i might sound vague, but any help will do. Thanks!

I guess it all depends on how hard you want it to hit, the type of music you listen to, the overall quality of the equipment you want, and how much you're willing to spend.

I have a single 10" JL audio 10w3 sub in a small custom enclosure that's mounted in the side compartment, powered by a mono 250 Watt JL amp, and it gave me more than enough bass than I needed.

It's for sale, by the way. I'm taking out all my sound equipment before I put my 4runner up for sale. Let me know if you're interested and I'll hook you up with a good price. Only thing is I'm in LA... a good 5-6 hour drive from Sacramento. Not sure how much it would cost to ship.

im running a jl 500/1 amp to one rockford 10 p1 and ported box, and boy does it hit. the beauty of our rigs is the acoustics on the insides. im a huge fan of ported boxes and whatnot, so i would say go that way. and one jl 500/1 is plenty of power for one or two subs, but you just need to look around and see what would work for you

I put a factory kicker audio hatch back box in my runner. It came with 2 12 in comp subs in it. The box is nice and it come pre built from kicker, its ported and has the filling in it. And I put a 1000 watt kenwood class D monoblock amp in. It powers the subs great and sounds super clean. Its not too much bass. I paid 325 for everything shipped from techronics.com. They always have the best deals so check them out

I will be changing out my current amp which is a 4.1 channel Alpine amp to a 5.1 channel amp. Keep in mind, the physical size of the amp is the same and it fits underneath the driver's seat. Then I will be running a single JL 13" off of the AMP. For me, that will be the setup I will be going to.

I run 2 12" KIcker CVR's off a 750.1 class D mono Kicker amp (2008 edition). They thump just about as hard as you would want a car to. If I crank them too loud, it rattles parts of my car which in turn makes the sound a bit distorted, but after tweaking it for a week or so I figured out what was making the noises and sound deadened them. Putting the rear seat(s) down helped with sound quality too, especially since they were vibrating against the brackets that hold them upright, so that eliminated extra noise too. Also you can tweak the sound by alternating your windows up and down (2 in front up, 2 in back down; all 4 down, etc) to create even a different sound. I always leave my rear seat down since I rarely have riders in the back and it helps get more airflow to the port on the box and the amp itself

im thinking of selling my rockford for these JL's

they are recessed back so the porting actually comes around to the front with the subs. they are only 10's, but they hit harder than most other subs iver heard in my lifetime, including 2 mtx 15's with 1500 watts running to them


i believe they cost almost a grand for the 10's

Are you going for pure loudness, pure sound quality, or a mixture of both?

How much do you want to spend?

How much space can the box take up?

For the wow factor I would do two 18" woofers. That would be pimp.

The limiting factor is probably price and if you can build and install some stuff yourself.

I personally think JL is overpriced.

I want a good kick, but I really like good sound quality. As far as trunk space goes, I probably don't want anything bigger than a dual 12...I have seen some dual 12" boxes that are quite big themsleves. I was wondering if a Single Ported 12" would be adequate for decent kick, yet keep good sound quality. Anyone recommend any single 12" subs!? amps?

I would go with a 12" FI Q. That thing is really nice.

Put it in a nice ported box that's atleast 2 cubic feet and throw atleast 1,000 RMS to it and you'll be good to go.

Hey mike,

Here's a pic of the sub and the enclosure. I also have matching brown carpet to go with it. (It's an old picture taken before the carpet was applied.)

The only thing about the enclosure is that in order to fit into the side panel, you have to cut out the inner compartment. But if you have the same interior color as I do, I can include my entire rear panel that's already pre-cut so you won't have to carve yours out. I'm going to get a replacement panel from a junkyard with the compartment intact before i sell the truck.

What would you be interested in? I have the following:

1) JL audio 10w3 10" sub (don't remember which version but i'll find out)

2) JL audio 250/1 amp for the sub

3) JL audio Cleansweep, digital interface w/Ipod hookup

4) JL audio 300/4 4 channel amp (I may be keeping this one)

5) MB Quart Discus component speakers... 6.5" for front door.

1000 watts is plenty. im happy with 500. its all personal preference


and JL may seem overpriced, but its extremely high quality and they dont compromise performance in any aspect

Yeah, JL's stuff is good, I just think you can get better for the money.

If you have the money though it's a good choice.

how about this, get a JL amp, and put whatever the heck you want behind it. once you have the amp, it will make so many things sound better...... and it will last you for dayyysss

plus you can find used ones for like, just over 200 on ebay for a 500 watt.

The way the sub is layed in there it actually magnifies the sound how it deflects of the interior of you 4runner so it kicks as hard as a lot of dual 12's or subs with more power. Its pretty expensive but it sounds amazing.

I agree with Bretski.... that's an awesome box, and definitely the way to go if you have the $$. A lot better than the one I have because it's custom molded so it fits right into the side compartment without having to cut it out. I was looking at those before I got mine but they were a little too pricey for me.

If you're patient enough, you can find used ones every now and then on ebay. someone's selling one for a 4th gen right now.

the custom work looks good. the most important thing to start with is the amp. (if you already have the head unit.) spend your money on the amp and when you do make sure you do some research. (ohm ratings and warranty is a must) some of these big companies like orion are in finacial trouble and probably wont have the best warranty options. if you are wanting an non expensive amp go with like a 4 channel amp instead of a class d amplifier.
