Successful 5th Gen Key fob swap!

well the battery crapped out 4 days after i put a new one in. I smashed the fkn key into pieces and threw it away in different trash cans throughout the city.

Awesome idea, shitty execution by the key company

FOUR DAYS? :wow:

You must have gotten one of the better ones. :thumb:

36 hours out of my first battery and less than 2 out of my second.

The dude, extrapartssssssssssssss, sells a junky product. I am well out of my 30 days but decided to write him an email sternly expressing just how sub-par his keys are without lashing out. I explained that I have replaced multiple batteries in both units and tried using tape to hold the batteries in place after one of the clips broke. I also stated that I have been stuck outside, alarm set, in the cold with my wife and 2 small kids for 3-4 minutes while I take the key apart to reset the battery just to unlock it.

Without any banter I received an email this morning giving me a RMA #, address and directions on returning them for a full refund.

So if you are continuing to deal with this key and are out of your 30 day return period, I suggest you write Mr Partssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss a note asking for this same.

-- Now I just need to find a factory made key or fob that will work.

Caveat Emptor.

I purchased a set of these keys from Extra-Partss. I alike many others, had issues within a few days. I emailed them asking for an exchange, but then decided I would just take a return, as I read of other people's problems. I told them I wanted a return, was provided an RMA number, and sent the keys back.

Here's a little precursor: When I ordered my keys from extra-partss (ES), I specifically asked them if the shell/ back of the key would bear the Toyota logo, which I was told it would not. So I purchased some shells from Amazon (just like the key fob from ES but without a transponder), as the shells had the Toyota logo.

Within a few days of returning my keys, I received an email stating I had sent back a product that was not theirs. While you may think that I made a mistake, and sent back a key with the Toyota back-piece from Amazon, you would be assuming incorrectly.
The ES keys came with Toyota logos on the back. I never used the shells I ordered from Amazon.

I explained this to ES, but they stalled and stalled, which practically took up my 30 day return window. It wasn't until I told them that their keys had the Toyota logo (which I mentioned to them I was originally told they wouldn't), was I told I could get a refund. So I thought everything was good to go.

That was, until I received another package from them, with two new keys. I emailed ES informing them, which they said to again return. I instead refused shipment, as I didn't want to pay for return shipping on principle. Again I was told I would be issued a refund as soon as they received the keys.

Yesterday I received a package from ES, with two new keys, that were shipped Jan. 15th, which was after I returned the keys (refused shipment). I promptly emailed, an today I received a message that I was far outside my 30 day return window, and that they had fulfilled my exchange (essentially).

Mind you, I have been nothing but polite and accommodating. It's not so much about the money I wasted on this Chinese, knock-off junk, as it is the principle. I'm sick and tired of all these would-be "fly by night" internet companies that have deplorable customer service. Furthermore I told them I would do whatever I could in order to obtain a refund, provided they don't issue me an RMA number to which I can pay return shipping to them, for a refund. I also told them that I would potentially look into trademark infringement, unless they are licensed to sell this product with a Toyota logo, as I highly doubt they are. I'm out to protect the consumer, and potentially Toyota's corporate interests as well.

For those of you still with me: Caveat Emptor.

Sorry for the long rant, but shoddy businesses like this shouldn't exist. If this protects one consumer on this message board, then this post was worth it.

If anyone wants emails for proof and/ or future correspondence included in this post, I will be happy to provide it.

Update: I received an email today stating I would not receive a refund because I'm outside the 60 day return policy, due to the fact I sent back keys that weren't their product because the keys I sent back had the Toyota logo on them.. Which I received from them.

Anyone else on here receive keys from Extra-Partss that had the Toyota logo?

I'd like to know out of curiosity.

I plan on going up the ladder with PayPal and eBay on this. People like this have no business conducting business of any kind.

Yes, mine had the silver Toyota logo on it. In fact, it's funny, the logo actually fell off and my wife found it on the ground so I picked it up and put it in my desk drawer at home.

These guys are ripoff artists, sad to say. Thirty bucks isn't a huge amount of money but their product is absolute crap.

I need to do this! Down to one aftermarket spare key and no fob.

How are the keys from the ebay seller holding up?

Does anyone have a part number for an OE key? Anyone know where to get one for a reasonable price?

Thanks!

I bought one for 30 bucks. The battery that was in it when it arrived was shot. I put in a new battery, programmed the keyless entry (i don't have an immobilizer) and it worked. The rear hatch button didn't do anything, but every thing else worked as it should. About a week later the battery was dead. It seems that's all the battery lasts in this thing.

Yes, they wouldn't let me get my refund because apparently they don't sell keys with the Toyota logo; ergo, the keys I sent back for my refund are not their product.

I'll be calling Toyota Corporate to see if they care about the TM infringement. Sad to say I probably wouldn't mind so much if they had an ounce of customer service.

Just some random guys drop shipping Chinese crap.

so what was the outcome of your case? I'm pretty much in the same situation and now am dealing with this via ebay dispute resolution.

Okay so after reading 15 pages of ups and downs with the keys. can someone please just write a final conclusion. What key fob to buy from what seller. What seller to avoid etc. maybe even edit the first post to include that information and sticky it. Its a great thread. but with so much going on I was more confident about doing this before i read the thread. after reading it I'm more confused than I was lol.

This. Either bite the bullet and buy the factory original key from Toyota or figure out how to make your current key and fob work for you.

Buying one of these $30 keys from extra partssssss is like putting a $20 bill and a $10 bill on the ground and setting them on fire.

Just use the OEM factory ones. I ended up throwing my two (one from extra partsssssssss, and one from someone else on ebay in a drawer).

As far as I know, there is not an OEM fob with the correct FCC ID to work in these keys. I have 1 factory key fob that I bought from a dealer, but it will not program as it is the wrong ID.

I have a co-worker with a '09 Corolla with the combo key. I tried unsuccessfully to get her fob to work on my car.

Unfortunately, her key didn't have FCC ID or part number on it so I don't know which FCC ID it was exactly.

Key Fob Experience

I ordered the key fob from Extra Parts as well. The key will intermittently appear not to work. There is a problem with the rolling code module of some sort I was told. All you need to do is pop the battery out and back in. The battery isn't dead it is just that the key fob needs to reset. I have used my fob for up to 3 weeks at a time without having to reseat the battery. It takes me 30 seconds or so. IMHO worth the short reset I need to do. You can program the immobilizer and keyless by yourself. You just need the key cut by a locksmith.

Pretty annoying and inconvenient to have to pop the battery out every week just to get your fob to work. I think thats why most of us are fed up with this mod. The battery compartment isnt nearly durable to withstand constant removal of the battery. My first key broke the first time it was disassembled.

Yep my oem one is waterproof. I had them in my swimsuit pocket, sat in a hottub for over an hour, got out and they worked fine. I tested it several other times and water does not get inside.

I was surprised my oem key fob/remote works after it was in the washer and drier. :jaw:

Ordered this key today, can't wait to lighten up my key chain and finally have a spare key! Mine only came with one when I bought it and the plastic loop on the fob broke off about a month ago.
