Sulfur TSB process

sulfer smell

Ok, so all i have to do to fix the problem is call up my local dealer and tell them about the sulfer smell. On this topic what exactly is a "tsb". Then i should also ask them if they have done it before.

Anything else that i should ask in reference to this. I am in NJ, so i will let all the other NJ heads know about this.

TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin - its not a recall that is necessary, it is up to the user to get it done if the problem is there. Sulfur one is only good for 96months or 80k.

All I did, was tell my service manager that I had an offending rotten egg smell when accelerating or going up hills and he immediately told me that there was a TSB to fix that very issue. Mind you, I knew there was a TSB I just wanted to see if they'd give me any lip about it. Suprisingly they didn't...

If you want, print out the TSB (search the boards for "Sulfur TSB) and have it with you when you approach the dealership. Also keep in mind that the TSB is only good for certain VIN numbers so hopefully yours is included. You'll definitely get pushed away if yours isn't included, but if you speak to them they may try it.
 
Great thanks for the help. I guess in reference to the VIN number situation, is there anyway to find out if mine is on the list, besides from going to the dealership.

Chunder - on the actual TSB there is a section (first page) that shows the VIN number that Toyota "stops" covering on. Every VIN before that is covered.

If you grab your registration out of your truck and then compare it to the VIN's listed, you should be able to tell if yours falls within the specified range.

Do a search for the Sulfur TSB. There is one for the V8 and the V6 (they are different). On the TSB is the range of VINS that are affected.

Look in your door jam or in your driver side windshield and you'll see your VIN.
 
Ok, so i have my vin# and it is after the number on the TSB. Will they still do it, or do i have to go in there like a whirling dervish, Ya know, all fists and elbows
 
You could do that, or you can be nice and see how they react to that first.

My Service Manager didn't even ask for my VIN, I mentioned the symptoms and he mentioned the TSB. Could be different in your case though...

im in canada, and i just contacted my dealer, and they told me they know nothing about the TSB or the CATS as previously discussed..... anyways, they told me to bring it in, and they will recalibrate the sensors, and see if an update is available to my software to hopefully fix the problem....as for having the cats replaced, he said it would NOT be under warranty as they have nothing from toyota saying theres fault with them. he also said that as of 2005, crude oil will be made with less sulfer, which may correct the problems....any opinions on this?
 
sounds like dealers are full of s*it all over the world, not just in the US (and I thought we were the only ones lucky enough to have them!!).

now, I don't know what sort of rules/regs exist in Canada regarding compliance with the Toyota issues TSBs, but I'd follow Sharp's suggestions in the previous posts... try to start out nice and then if they don't do what they are Supposed to do, bring the TSB.

My assumption would be that they have to honor the TSB in Canada too. Anybody know for sure?
 
Took my truck in this morning and it took 3.5 hours. The sulfer smell is gone but my drivers auto up/down no longer works. The service writer told me it took the tech two tries to calibrate the ECU. I'll be heading back to the dealer tomorrow to get this fixed.
 
Man, you ever notice when you bring your truck/car to the dealership to get something fixed, it sometimes is, but something else always is efed up. Man i may just live with the smell.
 
No need to take it back to get the window fixed. They probably disconnected the battery and the auto settings need to be reset. Just lower your window half way, then pull the switch to raise the window up and hold the switch for a while after it closes, then release it. I think that's how it's done. It's in your owner's manual.

UPDATE

Well, it's been 2 weeks since they recalibrated the ECU and like I thought, it did absolutely nothing. I am bringing my truck in on Wednesday for them to verify the smell. The guy on the phone said "I have to check the TSB, there may be certain cirumstances that aren't covered" (he tried to say that hard accelerating might not be covered and they may be talking about 20mph strolling. I'm assuming this is bs...)

Anyway, I'll update you on how and if they are trying to screw me over on Wednesday for any locals that were thinking of getting this done there.
 
Just remind them that the Toyota approved procedure doesn't give them the option not to install the CATS. To complete the modification in a Toyota warranted manner, they MUST perform both steps of the procedure.

Who knows, maybe they plan to bill Toyota (under warranty) for the new CATS and then sell them???

Get your new CATS.
 
Yup, have them install those new CATS and reflash the ECU again. Basically have them do the TSB correctly the way Toyota outlined it. They were probably trying to save money by doing a shortcut, stupid them now they have to waste more money and YOUR time doing it again.

My boss is fond of the addage "There is never time to do it right, but there is always time to do it again." I think it pertains in this situation...

Oh I will be there on Sunday. They will not be keeping my 4runner over night. Do they have a choice not to install the CATS if they can't reproduce the smell? Either way, they will check tomorrow and if they bullsh*t me then I will take it higher-up. They will not however be keeping my 4runner for a week while they dick around.
 
Dude, if they give you BS tell them you are going to call Toyota Customer Service and complain. They never did the TSB. All they did was reflash the ECU. To do the complete TSB, they have to do EVERYTHING.

Which dealership did you take it to? I want to make sure I don't go there :D ;):
 
Well, I went to the Autopark in Chantilly (Ourisman Chantilly Toyota) since I bought the 4runner there. I realize they haven't done the TSB, they said that they are not required to do so until they reproduce the problem. I will drive them around if I have to and so help me god they will smell this damn problem.
