Sulfur TSB process

Well they are right and wrong. Toyota does not authorize them to do the warranty repair until they've verified the problem exists. Toyota also doesn't authorize the use of the new ECU firmware without the new CATS nor (apparently) the CATS without the ECU firmware. Your dealership service shop performed a modification to your vehicle which is not factory authorized. This information could be used by Toyota to deny future warranty claims.

If you weren't charged for the repair, then you dealership billed Toyota. In that case they did so without actually performing the repair they billed. That's called fraud! I'm sure Toyota would be glad to know about it. The dealership manager would probably like to know too. In short, you've got them by the balls in more way than one here. There's only one way out that doesn't cost them anything and that is to finish the procedure.

After they do the CATS make sure they redo the initialization/calibration step documented at the end of the TSB. Or, if possible, make sure they just do the whole thing over.

What a bunch of slimy bastards. Isn't it just plain sad, that they can't fix a problem that they cause, without a hassle.

Is that asking to much.
 
BIG UPDATE

I got a call this afternoon from them saying how they were tired of "playing games with Toyota" and they went ahead and ordered the CATS. They made it sound like they were forced by Toyota to be that annoying about it. Well, maybe I placed blame on them before I really knew the situation. All I know is, they ordered the CATS and i'm getting them installed tomorrow afternoon.

*note* not sure if all dealerships say this but ourisman chantilly toyota told me I had to leave it over night because they had to install it on a COLD car so be prepared for that.

Will be getting my truck back Thursday afternoon, hopefully de-stinkified.

Good luck, and please keep us update don the sit. Man, i drove around the other night with it open, holy isht, i don't know if it is getting worse, ir it is just annoying me more. Don't know, but i def know that i need to get it done soon
 
I dont' know if they need it overnight, but they do need the exhaust system to be cool. I wouldn't want to be the tech having to replace a steaming hot exhaust piping :eek:

I dropped mine in the morning and then picked it up in the afternoon. Hell with the weather we're in, you could probably have it cooled down in 2 hours :D

Now be prepared to have a little stink, the TSB helps but doesn't totally 100% remove it.

Oh yeah, when you pick it up, start the truck and drive around the vicinity of the dealership to make sure the VSC lights don't go off. Thats what happened to mine on the way home and I had to wait until the next Monday to bring the truck back tot he dealership for them to fix again. Only took a few miles for it to come on for me.
 
oh ok I'll make sure to check that. If i can drive around normally with the windows down and not be blasted out of my car with stink then I will be happy. I realize it still happens some with REALLY hard accelerating, but normal driving is crazy
 
i remember seeing someone talk about what fixed the problem of having the VSC light come on however I can't find it. If anyone knows, please tell me incase it happens.

(picking up my truck in about an hour or so)
 
Someone mentioned that they had to recalibrate the Yaw sensors or something to that effect.

On mine they had to repair a sensor but I forgot which one it was. Sorry my mind is swiss cheese.
 
I went and picked up my 4runner and drove the whole way home with the rear window down (i know it's like 25 deg) and NO SMELL! HALELUYA (spelling?)!

They bumped the window lock button and I freaked out because the rear window button wouldn't work but felt stupid once I realized it was on "lock"

...which brings me to my next question.

Why the hell did Toyota make the window lock button work so that the driver can't roll down the passenger windows down from his side?! In every car i've seen the driver can lock the passengers control but still has control of everything! Is this a setting I could change?
 
My Runner Stinks Too!

I've just been sitting back reading all the post about the "stinky" 4Runners, trying to decide if I should have mine done.

I feel like as if I'm attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting :beer: ....... "Hi, my name's Gary, and I have a stinking problem"

Yes, I stink too and would like to kick this problem for good. Oh I've tried all the various brands of booze ... er Gas, and have found no difference, I still stink.

My biggest problem is when I check the TSB, EG015-04, my vin number is beyond the numbers allowed, probally due to the issue date of 5/27/04 on the TSB. I didn't get my Runner until 9/29/04.

Is there a more up-to-date TSB on my V6 4Runner? :confused: I would like to have a copy of it myself before contacting the dealership. Anybody have any problems working with either service dept. at University Motors in Morgantown WV, or Jim Robinson Toyota in Wheeling WV?

I have the same problem. Not the drinking on, but the one concerning my VIN # being beyond the number on the TSB.

LOLOLOL. sometimes the silliest things make me laugh. Especially the site of someone falling down. That isht always cracks me up

Did you manage to find an updated TSB for the 04 V6? Mine also falls out of the range and the dealer refused to fix it, even though he reproduced the problem. I had them look at it last fall and since summer is coming, I'd like to get this done soon.

I have a 2003 and decided I like the Sulfur smell. No kidding. Why? Perfect weapon on the road for road ragers. Just the other day a guy was riding my ass. I accelerated full throttle and then slowed down to the speed limit. I could actually see him rolling down his window, and his passenger, a girl, was fanning her hand like he just farted. I love it now!
 
When I called the dealer about the smell they told me to bring it in. I didn't mention the TSB at 1st, but theygave me the spiel about gas quality and I pulled out a printed copy of the TSB. Since then the dealer has been somewhat cooperative. They made my service appt. and sent me on my way.

I dropped my 4R off the morning of 2/15 and was told it would take a day to replace the CAT converter, when 4 o'clock rolled around and I hadn't heard from the dealer, i called. They told me that they ordered the wrong kit. When I went in that afternoon to pick up my truck, they said that they were missing parts due to back orders from high demand from the TSB.

They gave me a rental car to use, but I would rather have my 4R back. I called today (2/16) and they are saying it will take a 3 days to get the part. I don't have a lot of confidence in my service manager and am not sure what to do at this point. I guess I will wait the 3 days and hope they get the part.

I will post an update when new info is available.
 
I have the terrible sulfur smell and I tried to get my dealer to replace my Cat from the TSB, but they refused saying it was a problem with the gas I was putting in my 4R. I even said there was a TSB and they still refused.
