Sunglass and iPod storage

My 2010 LE had the overhead sunglasses holder and the USB in the glove box. While the USB was a pain to have in the glove box, it was nice that I just tossed my iPod in there and didn't have to worry about it. Now that I have a 2015, it's now where my old AUX jack was and so I don't know where to stick the iPod so it's not rattling around. I sometimes just use my iPhone via Bluetooth but I like just having the iPod always plugged in and not worrying about it. Where are people putting there's since I still like to use my cupholders and when I stick it into the two little cut-away storage holders it just slides right out?

Similarly, I now have a TRDP with the off-road controls where my old sunglass holder was. I used the old one multiple times a day and still find myself reaching up there every time I get in my truck. I don't like the center console so much and have the same issue of sliding out with the cut-aways. I looked at the visor organizer from Blue Ridge Overland, but it didn't look like it had a good slot for sunglasses. What are the rest of you guys doing for yours?

I feel you with the lack of a distinct sunglass holder. I have the same controls with the Trail. I store my sunglasses in a nice square Oakley case that fits perfectly in the "upper shelf" in the center console. I know you said you arent a fan of the center console but I havent found a safer and more out-of-the-way option. Interested to hear some other peoples ideas.

You could still run the USB cable from the center console to the USB port (in front of the shifter knob right?). The only nuisance is you would have a cord running from the center console to the USB, but no cupholders occupied by phones.

Maybe you could devise a little iPod holder that has velcro and stick it to the carpet on the wall of the center console (by your leg) so the cord is out of the way completely. Not sure if that would be safe though, so disclaimer: I am not recommending this.

I'm using one of these for my little iPod Shuffle. It's mounted on the flat of the dash to the right of and below my tuner knob. The magnet is powerful but small enough it doesn't interfere when I want to use the clip. I picked mine up at a Love's Truck Stop. Too dark for pictures but I'll try to get one later this week. As for the sunglasses I keep mine in a hard case in the little recess in the door in front of the pull handle on the armrest.

Is it thin enough that it doesn't interfere when you put the visor up?

Here is my daughter's solution for a sunglasses holder for the center console. Notice the scotch tape seams!

Here's what I did for my Ipod:
I purchased a $2 black 6"X6" mat
Purchased a black USB to Ipod 3' cord

I plug into the USB, wrap the Ipod in the black mat and shove it in the cubby right above the front cupholder. That way it does not rattle and the Ipod is not visible when the vehicle is unattended.

I, like you, just left the Ipod in the glove box on my old 4Runner. With this one I had to be more creative.
Now on the sunglasses side I am backwards from you, coming from a TE to a SR5. I now store the sunglasses (prescription) in the nice glasses holder up near the homelink buttons. Before, with the TE, I just used a soft glasses case in the bottom of the driver's door. It wedged in there nicely and didn't rattle and the glasses were easily accessible. Hope this helps and I will take pics of the Ipod location if you want.

I'm thinking about maybe just downloading to my iPhone since I'm now at 64GB and then doing a ram mount or other solution like 3wb's to kill two birds with one stone (since my phone also rattles around without a home).

The two things my muscle memory will need to be retrained on are reaching above for sunglasses and reaching for the start button (and getting the keys out of my pockets BEFORE I buckle in).

Yes. The little black mat is one of those non skid rubber mats like you would use to lay something on to keep it from skidding around. You just plug up the Ipod to the USB, wrap the plugged in Ipod with that little rubber mat and stuff it back in the low cubby hole. Nobody, including you, can see it and it looks just like a cable going to nowhere. Works great. I use my phone for communication like talk and text and email. With the new Entune I just leave the phone in my pocket now and use Entune to do all the communication. Voice dial works great and it reads my text and email to me while driving.

I use bluetooth/Iphone for music, but this would work with an ipod as well. I have to give credit to another member posting this a while back. There are a lot of different Ram mount fittings so you can make these different ways. I bought these 3 peices on Amazon for less than $40 and mounted it like this.
The mount is very solid and there is no noise or ratting with it holding my phone.




Removed this peice and installed the lower mount peice like this.

I like this solution but am scared of effing up my trim. What is the likelihood of scratching or cracking the plastic trim during removal and drilling?

Just move the aux/usb ports back into the glove compartment. The knockout is still there.

The plastic trim was very easy to remove from the dash, just pull it off firmly. Before I drilled I used some blue masking tape over the area so I didn't scratch any of the paint. Just make sure the placement holes are good on the back of the trim peice before drilling. The plastic is pretty thick and I can't see it cracking during the drilling. I also used some rubber gromet/washers so the mount doesn't scratch the trim paint over time.

I came across a build thread a while back and he posted about the ram mount and details of the installation. But I have searched for it since then and cannot find it.
