Sunroof Inop

Did a search and didn't see exactly what was going on here.

Just got a 05 SR5 last week. Going through some of the stuff on the truck. The sunroof doesn't work. When hitting the slide open, no noise but a relay click, but when hitting the tilt open there is a pretty loud clunk, like a bind in the motor. There is no movement of the glass, even felt with my hand on the glass.

With the relay click sound, I would suspect motor more than likely, as power is to and through the switch. With the clunk, it sounds like the motor is engaging, though I know it could still be a motor issue.

I have not had a chance to pull my power probe and tear it apart to check, yet. Hopefully within the next week, if it's needed.

Chances are the motor/cables are bound up. It's the eventual state of all sunroofs it seems like (why I don't like them and recommend people to avoid them)

If the glass won't tilt up/move then it will be trickier to get the sunroof glass off, but it is doable. That could give you some room to inspect things. But realistically you're going to want to remove the whole sunroof assembly and tear it down noting what parts need to be replaced/serviced. I don't think Toyota offers full unit replacements for older sunroof assemblies (though I think they started doing it for newer vehicles finally). You'd have to order everything piecemeal.

It looks like you can luckily get the majority of the frame and cable components as large assemblies.

The cable set will be prefix 63205A and the frame/carrier is going to be prefix 63203F. You might be able to just get by with a cable set, but it depends on how much of the moving bits in the frame/carrier are jammed/broken/seized; again only a full removal and inspection will determine what can be serviced/salvaged and what will require replacement. I will say that it seems like there's no single-use parts (some other models and brands will have parts that can only be used once so if you mess up reinstallation or didn't line up something you have to buy a handful of bits to replace when you go back into it... don't ask me how I know lol) so that is a nice bonus.

We don't usually do sunroof repairs because most customers don't want to pay the labor for pulling the unit and tearing down let alone the cost of parts to replace/repair it. If you do go down this route I am sure the forum would be grateful for a detailed write-up and if you need help/diagrams I can probably dig some up for you.

I mean if it is currently closed and sealed, I probably wouldn't do anything else until you have the space to drop the whole unit out and look at it. I have seen both situations where a new set of cables and some cleaning fixed the sunroof good as new; but I've also seen where the cables broke, junk got jammed into the passages the cables ride in, and then corroded into such a mess that there was no reasonable way to fix it without basically replacing everything except for the glass itself. That's why I highly recommend pulling the unit out on a bench so you can really see everything properly.

This post contains a helpful look at the mechanism for bench testing. My sunroof was clicking when fully open (likely seized cables) and I've just left it closed and stopped using until I have enough time to pull it all out to r/r. But that was 4+ years ago lol.

If you dig into it, any documentation would be appreciated!
