Yesterday my auto open/close stopped working on my 4-runner. I can still close/open it, it just wont do it automatically any more. Any answers as to why? Thanks.

I tried that and it did not work. I think it's weird if the switch is bad that it would work at all!? Has anyone else had this problem?

Mine is doing the exact same thing as of a couple days ago. It used to be fine but a couple days ago I have to hold the button down to get it to open all the way, rather then just holding it for a second or so. Hopefully it's nothing major!

If resetting it doesn't work (open it all the way, then release and press the open button again, hold for 5-10 secs).... my next step would be to disconnect the battery, pump the brakes to discharge any residual charge, then reconnect the battery.
Please note that this will require you to reprogram and auto open/close windows, including the driver's and rear window.

Sunroof automatic controls gone, but switch works
Wow -- my sunroof started this yesterday. I thought the kids had been playing with the switch -- the switch allows me to fully open or fully tilt the sunroof in my 2003, but it's automatic functions for opening, closing or tilting up or down seem to be gone. I'll try to carefully clean the tracks and wind guard, but I don't know where the position sensors.
Wild to see three posts within two weeks on this issue. Disturbing.

My automatic features came back. I opened the tilt all the way and held it. It did a little twitching motion. Then I pressed to tilt it back down and it did it automatically. And now it works as it should! Give that a try, it worked for me.

when ever the ecu looses constant 12 volts it looses the "position points" of all the way closed and all the way opened (any time the battery is disconnected). I'm talkin spicifically about the auto window functions. to reset them according to Toyota TSB'S
Driver window:
with window all the way up hold the switch in the down position allow window to roll all the way down hold switch in down position for 5-10
seconds then immediately pull up hold switch in the up position let window close continue holding for 5-10 seconds this resets auto Functions tap
down to test. indication of auto function needing calibration is your driver side window switch reading the word "auto" the illumination behind the text will be flashing. cup your hand over it to check in bright light.
this calibration has to be done to all auto programmed windows follow the same step for rear window sunroof and tilt function
with sun roof closed hold the slide open direction of the button until the SR fully opens hold for 5-10 seconds release an push the close direction of the button hold until fully closed continue holding for 5-10 seconds
follow by holding the tilt open button until fully opened hold for 5-10 seconds release and push the tilt close side of the button hold when closed hold for 5-10 seconds test by hold tapping to open each auto fuction

OK -- it's been a few weeks since I tried Burts suggestion. It worked. I had to fully close the unit, then hold the button down for 15-20 seconds until the window did a little bump. Then repeated with the window open. After the second trial, all works again. I did wd40 all of the visible tracks and moving parts, cleaned out all of the debris, and cycled the window several times (before cleaning and re-WD40ing all said parts. Thanks Burt. I didn't find that trick in the owners guide. Toyota -- document this stuff for your users, unless it's a way to have us generate dealer visits.

This was very helpful information. Since my rear window and sunroof have both had to be reprogrammed in the past several weeks, I am thinking my battery (original w/ 135K on it) might finally be kicking the bucket. I guess I better replace that before my next road trip...

I'm not too sure..I do know that this time it is covered on the warranty!!(from the previous time) so I'm letting them try whatever they want to fix it!
Thats the stealer for ya, $1200 for careless uneducated mechanics who I wouldn't trust with a potato gun.

Most states have serious protection for car repair folks. Stop the payment and you risk a repo man taking it (mechanics lien). As a practical matter, its best to give them a chance to make good on the repair. Then it's court time.

Sunroof stuck open
We have a 2003 toyata 4 runner limited edition sr5, the moonroof is curently stuck open. The switch works but when the switch is pushed to the closed position it makes a tick tick ticking noise as if it is trying to close but will not move from the complete open position. Any ideas or suggesions would be appreciated. Rain is on the way.
