Sunroof problems

We have a 2003 toyata 4 runner limited edition sr5, the moonroof is curently stuck open. The switch works but when the switch is pushed to the closed position it makes a tick tick ticking noise as if it is trying to close but will not move from the complete open position. Any ideas or suggesions would be appreciated. Rain is on the way.

Here is the TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Toyota regarding a moon roof that is stuck or operating improperly.

Driver window:
with window all the way up hold the switch in the down position allow window to roll all the way down hold switch in down position for 5-10
seconds then immediately pull up hold switch in the up position let window close continue holding for 5-10 seconds this resets auto Functions tap
down to test. indication of auto function needing calibration is your driver side window switch reading the word "auto" the illumination behind the text will be flashing. cup your hand over it to check in bright light.

Interesting. When I lose the auto function (battery disconnect), I hit the door lock/unlock button at the same time as the roll window down button. It reprograms all of my auto functions (except my after-market sunroof).

My automatic features came back. I opened the tilt all the way and held it. It did a little twitching motion. Then I pressed to tilt it back down and it did it automatically. And now it works as it should! Give that a try, it worked for me.

Not water tight

...it is closed and water tight...

Sunroofs usually are not water tight - they have drains that direct water to ducts in the wheel wells.

when ever the ecu looses constant 12 volts it looses the "position points" of all the way closed and all the way opened (any time the battery is disconnected). I'm talkin spicifically about the auto window functions. to reset them according to Toyota TSB'S

Driver window:

this calibration has to be done to all auto programmed windows follow the same step for rear window sunroof and tilt function

with sun roof closed hold the slide open direction of the button until the SR fully opens hold for 5-10 seconds release an push the close direction of the button hold until fully closed continue holding for 5-10 seconds

follow by holding the tilt open button until fully opened hold for 5-10 seconds release and push the tilt close side of the button hold when closed hold for 5-10 seconds test by hold tapping to open each auto fuction

Bought my '08 Runr a couple months ago and thanks to the forum, I will fix my sunroof issue. As a side note, I checked April 2012 and found there were sun flares on the 16th. Amazing Solar Flare Photos of April 16, 2012| Space Weather - that may have been the reason for the flurry of sunroof issues during that period.

does the rear wiper ever doing anything strange?
like wiping when you start the engine? that's a sign of the battery being at the least being low, if not on its way out.

Sunroof switch problem

Hello all. I am new at this so bear with me. I have a 2003 4Runner and just had it worked on (not a dealer) and they unhooked the battery. When I tried to use my sunroof tilt a day after, I had to hit the switch a few times for it to raise up (never had done that before) and the same to get it back down. It now doesn't do anything. I left it alone since I didn't want it to get stuck open. I read this thread about resetting the auto windows and sunroof switches. My questions are:
1. Do I have to disconnect the battery again and bump the brakes to get rid of charge and reconnect before I start?
2. Do I have to manually open and close the sunroof since the switch doesn't work to reset (or might it work again if I disconnect/reconnect the battery)?
3. If so, how do I manually open or close the sunroof?
4. My windows are working fine but should I go through the reset process with them anyways?

so are you saying that now if you hold the switch it will not do anything?

My wife opened ours a couple days ago and it wouldn't close, she has the pleasure of driving home with the heat blasting. I followed directions from a post here and it works now. As I recall you just hold down the button on one setting for 15 seconds, then switch the other way for 15 seconds and repeat. Mine made some nasty grinding/clicking once and now it closed. I'll wait until Spring to see if it works or not.

Harbor freight has cheap hand size and bigger suction cups for flat glass handling. I saved my power roof by sticking this on the glass to make a handle to help open / close it a few cycles during the lube process.

Sun finally came out in Michigan. Had a weird grinding noise and pop when opening the sunroof. :shocked:

But was able to "reset" based on this post! Back to sunshine and cruising :music:! Thanks!

Thanks for everyone who posted here. My sunroof seem to dip down as I was driving down the road a long time ago and the auto worked but jumped back down to a gap. I bumped it up with the switch and have left it alone. I'll have to try these suggestions to see if it will work again.

Sunroof button issue

Try re-initializing. Run the sunroof thru complete open/close cycles manually then followed by holding switch down for a few seconds.
