Supercharger guys..have a trans question??

Last November I ran across a 4th gen (black) supercharger for sale...great price couldn't pass up the deal. I sat it up on my tool box and started buying all the things to complement my new toy. I bought an 7th injector kit, set of headers, etc... Well 11 months later, I've bought everything that I wanted and was just getting ready to do my install when I ran across Gadget's personnel web page (Gadgetonline.com)!

As I was reading, came across a section on automatic transmissions. Gadget advises that after installing his S/C...his first time out, he smoked 2nd gear! He took his Toyota to a trans shop called Level 10...who stated if he would had sent them his valve body and allowed them to re-work it, he never would have smoked his 2nd gear!! So instead of a $600 re-work/shift kit, Gadget ended up paying couple thousand for a complete rebuild.

Not only does Gadget suggest the valve body be re-worked...but also to purchase a new torque converter at an unknown price.

Has anyone done this? Is it really needed? Even if its a 50/50 shot that it could happen...I'd rather be safe than sorry and I'll be making an appointment with Level 10! But if no one has had problems...then way waste $600-$1000??

Thanks for any and all help guys..

I've put about 5k miles on since I put on my supercharger and havent had any transmission related issues. Not a long time but haven't experienced anything yet. It's something I plan on doing down the line, but my theory when I put the supercharger on is I am going to run it until something blows, then I'll take care of it.

i have the same setup ( black SC and urd 7TH). i ran it for about few thousand miles on the stock auto transmission. No problems but i hated the "luxury shift" style of out trans and read i could possibly damage the trans. I then found a transmission reprogramming kit by Trans Go. Installed and shifts firm. Myself and a friend aka dirtyfingers, did them at same time. It replaces springs and drilling of the valve body plate. which was fairly easy and ALOT cheaper. there were 2 choices of shift styles to program...i did the more heavy duty and dirtyfingers did the street/strip style more mild. the more mild was perfect. very nice firm shifts. mine a little more aggressive. so far, no issues and id definitely try this first.
all that was needed was the TRANSGO kit= 100 bucks, i used toyota oem sealant, 10 quarts of toyota transmission fluid, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and mechanical knowledge and maybe a friend to help out too. you will be surprised how great it works. ask Dirtyfingers what he thinks as well.

10ac, do you have a link where you bought your Trans Go kit?? This sound like basically what Level 10 does?!?

Have you heard anything about the torque converters??

Thanks

Hmmm I never heard of this thanks.

With my turbo it launches way easier than a supercharger would but I'd still like to do something with my tranny

I have the 2nd gen black super charger factory installed since just after break in of motor per dealership, at the time it was only way to get the unit with 100k warranty and 7th injector from urd, (which started as a trd unit and gadget traded back when he was doing that)

I have a heavy pig of a 4runner and the only transmission issue I had was a big one.

My planetary gear grenaded under load when I was climbing hills in Oregon.
The shop opened it up and I showed me. Basically I lost all gears even reverse.
It's a rare case and I have since upgraded with IPT transmission unit with the valve body upgrade and heavy duty torque convertor.

I also got a bigger trans cooler, Than the tru cool 4544 I had.
It runs night and day. It shift solid and almost feels like pulls harder and the power is more consistent than the oem unit.

My advice run the stock transmission until you absolutely need to replace it then make a decision. I got 125k (about half was hard crawling miles) out of factory unit before upgrade and at that time the cost to replace was worth it, I might re consider now that I am pushing 200k and needing a supercharger rebuild too.

My 4Runner has been supercharged for the past 150k miles. I have never had a transmission issue.

However, I do have that Transgo kit sitting in my garage... Just scared to install it. Bought mine off of eBay.

Link for them on ebay... Cheaper...
Thanks guys for the links...I had no idea they made these...little lone, where to purchase them at! Wow...Heck of a lot cheaper then $600...that's for sure!!

Thanks for all the responses also. It confirmed all my searches...that everyone's not having major trans issues/failure for just installing a S/C! With the discovery of the Trans-go kit...especially only being $100...I think I'll take a semi safe approach to this. I'll go ahead and install the Trans-go kit...for cheap insurance and peace at mind. Then I'll do my S/C install...and drive it like that and see what happens!

I've already replaced my radiator for concerns of the dreaded "pink milkshake"...therefore, I was going to add an extra trans cooler anyway. So I'll go ahead with those plans...for a win, win now.

Now comes the hard part, I just need to get some free shop time to get the 4Runner in to install the Trans-go and S/C...hopefully by the new year?!?

Thanks again guys...

Russel

P.S. Congratulation to me...my 400th post!! Woo Hoo!!

I read online that most transmission places will install the Transgo thing for fairly cheap too... From what I hear it's not a DIFFICULT job, but it is a MESSY and tedious job.

I think $120 sounds right... I don't really remember. I honestly forget I have that thing in my garage every couple months then I randomly stumble upon it and wonder wtf it is.

My transmission started slipping after a handful of full throttle accelerations.

I shimmed my accumulator springs at a cost of $5, and now 20k hard miles later the same transmissions is still kicking, no signs of slippage.

The shimming does the same thing as those trans-go kits. I don't feel like the reworked valve body does anything. I have one on mine, and it made no difference. The shimming is what did it for me.

Yes, its a crappy job, not very hard, just not fun!

transgo

like i said, myself and dirtyfingers installed them. wasnt hard at all. just have everything ready thats needed for the job and its all good. i did this for piece of mind. i wasnt gonna wait till my transmission blew out then take the steps...that would cost more than 100 bucks plus gittin dirty. like i said tho, do not do the hot rod shift option thats in the kit, just do the street strip. i can say i have done the install, and have the urd 2.2 pulley and 7th injector and its running like a champ!!! nice firm shifts!! if you have any questions and would like to contact and talk to me for more detail about this install of the transgo, PM me, any of you and ill be glad to give you my number to call and help yall

so yes, sorry forgot to answer this, but like the other person says, ebay is cheaper than most places, BUT, read carefully and get one that comes in all original packaging and sealed. i did notice places selling them not in the original package. they were taking them out and enveloping them.
i purchased one brand new and sealed to be safe.

Great info in this thread, a good follow for sure.

When Gadget smoked 2nd, it's because he was running at the drag strip. I've got 220k miles on a stock transmission, and I believe all 220k miles were supercharged. I'm not sure, because I'm not the original owner and never talked to him. That said, my 1st - 2nd shift isn't quite perfect, I can tell it's worn. But the truck hasn't been driven hard by me at all. I never accelerate any harder than 20-30% throttle.

I'm going to install the Trans-Go kit and see what it feels like....if the 1-2 shift feels great I'll start driving it harder. :)

I wonder if this kit would be good to put on a non supercharged 4runner.?

all this kit will do for you is to have a firmer shift...not too hard but just won't be "luxury shift" very soft shifting. doesn't have to be supercharged. i have 33" tires, and I've layer into the throttle a few times or so and no problems at all and very pleased with the outcome. you can't beat the 100 bucks as opposed to 600+ bucks. all you do is swap some springs and some rods and drill few holes in valve body plate and remove few of the ball bearings.
