Surf BS Thread

Got out yesterday and caught like 2 quick walled in and outs.
Got skunked this AM.. little ones coming in but not breaking until practically ON the sand.

Pic from this morning. Sat and relaxed and watched the little ones.. still a decent way to start the day.

Finally uploading pictures from this day, Nov. 19. I remember we both had waves so I figured I'd upload some from what we got on this side of the country. Lots of lefts. Wish these were shot with a zoom lens but the third and fourth photos give some perspective on size

Beautiful. Amazing how hard it is to have perspective until you see someone on the face. Trying to get out the end of this week/weekend. Report looks decent, but COLD.

Did you guys get anything up in Maryland?

I argee. Walking up, it didn't look that big until actually watching a couple guys catch some waves. Definitely a pleasant surprise though.

It's starting to cool down here. 4/3 with booties and gloves. Praying I don't have to break out anything thicker this year.

Looks sick MattJakobs!!

Was super stoked on the day. Report leading up to it said 3-4, I know that might be Hawaiian 3-4 but definitely considered a bit bigger than that for us East Coast guys haha.

How long are you out of the water with your shoulder?

Its been about two months since the surgery, I just got my sling off and started rehab. My range of motion was horrible at first, barely able to move my arm a few degrees. I can now hit about 90 degrees before the pain sets in. Although I was not supposed to I tried to long board the other day, but it definitely did not work out, and my shoulder is now much more sore haha. They are saying a good couple of months till I will be as close to 100% as possible, but I dont need to be 100% to surf right? haha I hope to be able to start longboarding again by the new year :decision:

You could always give a SUP a go. :behindsofa:

Lol. I don't blame you. If I lived on one of the islands, I wouldn't be riding one either.

Awesome pics! I wussed out on the coast this weekend. Ended up having to work, so decided it wasn't worth driving 5-6hrs each way for a couple sessions.

Aloha!

Hopefully sooner than later my surf adventures will take place in a T4R. For now I'm in a TDI wagon(soon to be turned in to purchase a preowned 2016 Quicksand TRDP).

I have been splitting my surf time between NJ and FL. Soon to make NJ my year round break. Tired of the fickle waves in FL!!! When the schedule permits I love hitting LB, NY. The lefts there can get incredible. Puerto Rico during the winter when I can make it down. Last year I was fortunate enough to spend all of January in PR. The swell was epic all month...had to get out a few times when it just got too big!! (Image is my buddy Adrian(YES he's on a SUP)...I got out about 20 minutes before this was taken. Caught a bomb just a little smaller than this but of course no photos :frusty:)

I ride SUP's mostly but have been working back towards LB's and short boards(blew out my shoulder pretty bad a couple of years ago).

I currently ride:
7'8 x 26.5 Infinity BLine (supposedly 89l but think it's less)
8'10 x 27 Infinity Asymmetrical Gun 110l when it get's bigger than 3+OH

41 years young
5'10
165-175lb (depends on beers vs. training lol)

That's a Starboard Pro that you're on, right? What size is it and how do you like it? I've always found most of their boards pretty chunky on the rails, but I hear differently about the Pro models.

Yes, that is a 2015 Starboard 7'7 x 27. Funny you ask about the rails. I used to be am ambassador for them until I chose to drop them last Spring to get some customs from Infinity. Main reason was the rails!!! Although BC is a fantastic/bomb proof material for SUP's. I also wanted to drop liters without having to lose length.(I like paddle speed)

Starboard(and most production boards) have chunky rails IMO. More SUP than Surf rails, ya know. I cannot say that about my Infinity's. They both have beautifully shaped thin rails that perform incredible on a wave!! I feel like I am truly turning on rail opposed to some rail/fin combo, allowing for tighter turns and more speed. The other improvements I have found on the Infinity's is that they place their fins closer to rail, much more like a surfboard. The boards also sit flatter, way less nose up/tail sunk when waiting for sets. Boards absolutely fly with the channels in the tail section. Dave puts a lot of thought/time in his designs to make sure they perform.(FYI- I do not ride or represent Infinity in anyway. Just think they are putting out some of the best surf sup's on the market) Hope that helps Hepar

Yeah. I started on an 8'10" Starboard Widepoint and it wasn't long before I was wanting something less chunky. Both on the rails as well as on the nose and tail. Completely agree with the construction. That thing was bombproof.

Currently I ride an 8'4" Fanatic Prowave carbon 104l, a Naish Raptor carbon V95 and a 9'2" Riviera Patterson 128l (but I should sell it since I never ride it). I'm always intrigued by the shapes of the Infinity and would love to float one. Problem is, in this area the surf sup market is non-existent, so you are almost forced to buy before you try.

I think you would like the rails better on the Pro than your current boards but I don't think they would be that much different. Certainly not enough difference to warrant spending 3K. They are still too thick.

I can totally relate to not being able to try before you buy. I wasn't able to do that before I got my Infinity's. I talked with Dave Bohene about what I was looking for...age,skill,ability,conditions,etc...he was super helpful!!! I am friends with Giorgio(team rider) and Izzi Gomez. When I told them I ordered a couple, both said I'd be super happy with the switch. They were correct.

I was torn between the BLine and the RNB but decided to get the BLine after a couple of conversations with Dave and to support Giorgio's move from Starboard to Infinity.

I think you would be stoked on how they perform...even without a go on one first. It does take some adjusting to. That "secondary" support from the thicker rails is now gone. If you start to dip too much to the side the rail wants to dig in and dive. lol!! Doesn't take long to adjust and when you catch your first real wave on one you'll feel the difference. Board absolutely lights up!! It caught me off guard for sure. Now I make sections i would have never made in the past and my cutbacks are tighter than ever.

If you do call feel free to mention me...just say Dan from FL/NJ. I would recommend getting some extra glassing in the standing area. Boards do pressure ding. Probably would only add a 1lb or so. My 7'8 is about 12lbs but I wouldn't have minded 13lb...I am a little heavy on my feet and sometimes kneel.

Oh and you may want to keep that 9'2 if you decide to go after bombs...that extra paddle speed and weight is crucial. Otherwise dump it!

Love the intel. Thanks a bunch. Definitely won't be the last time I hit you up for info.

I hear you on the extra glassing. That Patterson is around 12lbs and I definitely wouldn't mind having 2-3lbs more glass on the board for a bit more strength.

Anytime! I have friends sponsored by almost every company...JP,Boga,Focus,Starboard,Infinity, Bic...etc etc and I usually go to Surf Expo once a year. If I don't know I usually have a friend that will.

Be well and Happy Holiday's!!! Hepar :surfer:

Just let me know if you're looking to ditch any old boards!
