Surging need help!

I replaced ecu, igniter, MAF, spark plug wires, and even fed it some sea foam and i'm still getting no results. 1990 runner is surging between 1500-2000 rpms. Toyota dealer was goin' to charge me $1300 to order ECU and the igniter. No thanks. I got the parts my self saving $1100 and put them in. Giving me the same problem. When i start it up it idols great. Step on the accelerator rpms hit about 1800 then it bogs down to 800rpm. Anyone have any idea what this could be!? All input welcome!

Still wont rev up? that bas****. All that work and parts for it not to go away.
Sorry buddy i got nothin. Good luck and congrats on t4rom.

sounds like a fuel issue, check the injectors to see if you are getting proper fuel delivery.
Maybe pull the injectors from your parts truck. Also check fuel pump pressure.

Check the vacuum hoses. I accidentally swapped two hoses at one point and it would surge like that every time I applied the brakes.

Thank you gentlemen, I will check back with you in a couple days with the results.

Also, I tried to put in a different model ecu same, same ports and all, and it actually made it to 3000rpm then bogged down.. as to the new correct ecu (and the old one) it only made to 1800rpms. Does that narrow anything down for ya?

Have you checked for any trouble codes? It sounds to me like TPS is out of adjustment or has kicked the bucket. Is this a 22RE?

Toyota dealer refused to work on the truck. "Specialist" says he will only work on it with new parts...!! I got the parts they said to get even installed them myself for 'em, and still they refuse. I need help gentlemen. It's me, this keyboard, and your input!

Parts I replaced:
1. MAF
2. Spark plug wires
3. Igniter
4. ECU - now I have two different models, (89661-3D010 wrong one) (89661-35320 correct one), the wrong one bogs at 3k rpm, and the correct bogs at 1800rpm.

maybe check out the Throttle Position Sensor. heres a writeup:

Performed a self-disgnostic on my truck today.. both ECU's.. the incorrect ecu 89661-3D010 lets me rev to 3rpm then bogs, and the CEL blinked twice paused then blinked seven more times. Code 27? The correct ecu 89661-35320 just gave me a steady blink. Does this look accurate? http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

I have been having the same issue with my 3vze for almost 12 months now but never got it fixed.
However, mine runs fine after 5-10 mins or until the engine is completely warmed up (not just the temp gauge sitting in the middle) So mine is defeintly an issue with temperature or some sensor.
Does yours get better once you have driven it around for a while or is it constantly bogging down?

Well, since my TPS didn't pass the test I decided to replace it in hopes that the surge would go away with it. The old TPS had a huge dead spot in it right off of idle and so if I was idling it would go as low as 500 rpm and maybe as high as 1k. When I removed the TPS the spring was so tired and gunked up that it would only return to about half throttle from wide open, that's pretty bad.

So I cranked it up and let it get up to temp and then reset my timing and idle and went for the test drive. Much more responsive throttle and I can feel that the engine is tuned much better but the surge is still hanging around. My Idle is steady and perfect though. My next step is to replace my spark plug cables and investigate my temp sender...i noticed that one of my heater hoses is weeping around a clamp and now I can hear air bubbles circulating in the heater when I take off in first gear.

I will let you know if anything works to get rid of the surge.

Hmm, might be onto something here!! I hear that same bubbly noise in 1st too! Only just started noticing it. Is it bad? Should I get it checked out asap?

Both my 4runners and my Jeep Wrangler did that. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

If you get enough air in your system it can raise hell with your coolant temp sensor which is not nice with EFI. It can cause probelms with idle and could potentially effect driveability. You also have a much higher chance of overheating with excess air as opposed to a correctly filled system. I am leaving my air alone until Friday when I can spend the time to completely flush, fill and replace the thermostat and test my temp sender.

Actually when I use an ECU from a 94 it revs up to 3k rpm and once that warms up it goes back to normal and only revs up to 1800-2000 rpm. It's a constant boggin'.

Took off the distrbutor cap, and I noticed this :

Could that crack be why it's bogging?

1800-2000 revs is normal? For idle? Man mine sits at about 700-800 rpm at idle. Highest it gets when its cold is maybe 1500 until its warm, then it drops below 1000 easily.

If you haven't changed your cap and rotor in a while, there's your motivation to do it. Old cap and cracked rotor could be your problem, seems extreme for a rotor but if it isn't riding correctly at higher rpm then there you go.

An update on my surge: On a whim I replaced my O2 sensor since I had a new one laying around. Seems that I am beating it down bit by bit, the hesitation is less noticeable and now only happens in a small RPM range. New rotor, cap, wires, plugs, valve adjustment, TPS and now O2 sensor. I am going to go after my AFM next...all just to find a vacuum leak somewhere that I can't pin down I bet.

didn't mean it like that.. i meant before it bogs down.. It hits 1800rpm and bogs down to 800rpm. Yeah my idle is fine all around. Just when I hit the accelerator it doesn't want to go over 2000rpm.
