Switching from shift mode to drive mode

I just bought a 2014 SR5. Can you switch from shift mode to drive mode (and visa versa) while moving, say at 50 mph? Or, must you come to a stop before switching? First time I've had this type transmission. Thanks for your help.

You can shift in and out at any time the transmission defaults to 4th gear so it will not damage the engine.

Ye no problems there. When you switch to the sport mode it automatically shifts to 4th and vice versa.

Yes. We got another wonderful 4" of the white stuff last night with ice underneath. I use sport mode almost exclusively in these conditions. It has become an automatic reaction to switch right after moving the other lever to 4HI.

Well that's what the dealer called it in my Tundra, so that's what I'm sticking with. But you're right, Manuel only say's "S" Mode. Probably some lawyer made them take the Sport term out to prevent lawsuits. Dang fun killing lawyers......

Long story. "Manuel says" is an old quote from an HBO movie about the Russian Olympic baseball team. It refers to the Cuban Army Manual of Baseball Operations. The Russian political officer kept countering the American manager they had hired with "But Manuel says". When the American finally got fed up and demanded to meet this Manuel the officer produced the book. So now anytime I hear a reference to a manual I always fall back on Manuel says.

I've gotten in the habit of putting it in "sport mode" everytime I start moving that way its not always hunting between 4th and 5th around town. Don't see the need for 5th gear when I'm going 35.

I use it every day. I live in the mountains and drive winding mountain roads like you see in TV commercials.

If you don't use engine braking you will cook and destroy your brake rotors in 2-3 years. And the resurfacing and new pads isn't covered by warranty because of how many people bring the cars in.

It's almost a requirement that if you live in Colorado, your AT vehicle needs a manumatic mode to limit the top gear. When I was here house hunting with the wife, the rental Altima we got in Denver didn't have one (it's not hilly there) and we managed to overheat the brakes driving around the mountains. It's unnerving the first time it happens.

I've known it as elect shift. I would think a sport or haul mode would keep it in a lower gear for longer (which I'd love to have).

It will stay in whatever lower gear you want til it hits the rev limiter. Try it ,the rev limiter is around 6500rpm if I remember right.

Now ,it won't let you down shift to a lower gear that doesn't match up to the revs just to protect itself. Just like you wouldn't downshift to first or second gear with a manual transmission driving along at too high of speed.

One cool/useless trick I noticed accidentally is...if you're in any lower gear and you push and hold the lever forward to upshift, it will jump straight to 5th gear. For example, if you're in 1st and don't feel like clicking the lever forward 4 more times, just push it forward and hold it for a few seconds and it jumps straight to 5th. Doesn't seem to work with downshifting, but for obvious reasons, lol.

S-Mode When Trailer Towing

We have a travel trailer on order, and on the advice of experienced RVers I plan to use S-Mode exclusively when towing to prevent the transmission from searching for gears, which causes heat buildup, and to stay out of overdrive (5th), which is not recommended when towing.

I'm also thinking of switching to synthetic transmission fluid to tow, because it resists heat breakdown better than conventional oil.
