Sylvania Silver Star/Lumnics Yellow fogs

Silverstars look nice (nice temperature) but they don't last. The regular ones are only good for about a year and the Ultra last about two years. For what they cost they are just not worth it (personal opinion).

:iagree: I got almost two years of out of mine on my old car. My friends got between three months (those with the 9005 to 9006 conversion) to year.

That's odd because I got over 2 years with the 9005 9004 on my 4th gen

I just finished installing all new High, Low, and Fog light bulbs. I used H9's in the low's and fogs and used the new 9011 HIR for the high's. The HIR were direct fit while the H9's need some minor trimming. But the output of these new bulbs are nothing short of :jaw drop:

Sorry guys... But what exactly are the size of the headlight bulbs (low beam)?? Is it H9's or H11's like someone mentioned earlier?

What about the fog bulb size?

The last vehicle I had Silver Stars on was my Tahoe. I liked the whiter light , but the wattage is the same as stock so they are not actually any brighter , just whiter. After replacing many many of the bulbs I decided to pull them and go back to stock bulbs , then you really notice the difference in how yellow the stock ones were . It was like driving with candles on the front of my truck ...lol.

My step son has PIAA higher wattage (85w) I think for low beams and the eq. for high and fogs . His have lasted good without fail. They were expensive though. They are on his 05 4R .

The whiter the light the worse it is in bad weather though.

We are kind of lucky though since our lo beams stay on when the hi beams are activated. Not many vehicles do that.

The stock low beams and fogs are both H11. If you are purchasing new bulbs, I highly suggest the H9's. It takes a slight modification to the bulbs, they are completely safe and VERY worth the time for the upgrade. :wow:

ahh I see.. is there a difference in the light output?

And how "slight" is the modification?

OK here goes... This is a great site to by the bulbs from H8 - H9 - H11 bulbs

The stock H11 bulbs are 55 watt with a 1350 lumen output. The H9 are 65 watt with a 2100 lumen output. The difference is literally night and day!! (Hahaha)

The stock high beams (9005 65 watt 1700 lumens) should be replaced with the Toshiba 9011 (65 watt 2500 lumen).

There is a great writeup found here on how to convert the H9's to fit the H11 socket. Converting Foglights from H11 to H9 - Second Generation Nissan Xterra Forums (2005+)

The modification is very easy. Use a very sharp razor blade to cut the extra inner plastic tab and use a dremel to trim the metal tab. Good luck and PM me with any questions!

Made the jump from H11 to H9's. Huge Improvement!

So I swapped my H11 LBs with H9s and swapped my 9005 HBs with 9011 HIR. What a huge difference! I highly recommend the H9s. In addition, I installed Hella Extreme Yellow H11s in the fogs. I really like the look and they seem to light up the road in bad weather better than the stock H11s.

So is the H9 bulb modification the best/easiest way to get more light output (rather than using some sort of aftermarket super white H11 bulb?), if I'm not willing to do a full HID conversion?

Have any of you that have done H9 bulb modification run into any problems/issues? What brand of H9 bulbs are most of you using? Thanks.
