Synthetic Vs Conventional motor oil

from uoa's done with my last car (infiniti g35) which was very rough on oil I would highly recommend castrol edge. Mobile 1 is not the oil it used to be. Castrol edge can be had for ~$27 for 5 quarts at wally world. can't be it for the price.

Mobile 1 is just as good as ANY of the top brands (if not better). Yes they have reformulated their oils but it has not affected its performance.

As far as filters Pure One is a very good low priced filter. The Mobile 1 filter uses high quality synthetic materials but it may not be any better then the OEM or the Pure One.

The main difference between 0w and 5w is the 0w has a lower pour rate (ability to flow better when cold/first started). Usually the 0w oils are the best oils each brand makes and they use the best additive packages in that oil (that's why they cost more). Toyota just started using a 0w-20 (made by exxon/mobile) specially formulated just for them that is proving to be a very good oil and is half the price of the top brands. It comes in some of the 2010/11 Toyota/Lexus models and has a 10K mile recommended OCI.

Pure One is a great filter for the money but the OEM is just as good.

I've run our 2004 V8 SE on M1 5w30 since new, 102k miles. I had Blackstone analyze the oil twice at 10k and each case there was plenty of additive package left and no significant contaminants (e.g., gas). I continue to change it at 10k. On a related note, I find more significant wear in the bolts holding the front skid plate! Part of my oil change routine is to wipe them with marine grease and also chase the treads (run thru a die) as necessary. I'm down to three, one rear bolt snapped on removal before I started coating them with grease. I highly recommend greasing the bolts if you're in a road salt state.
 
I have very little to add to this thread but speaking on oil filters - an old racing buddy of mine always said "get the Motorcraft over the Fram, Fram filters out too much and can starve your engine for oil pressure"....made sense to me. -

Same problem here, i snapped one off too. Im just going to start anti-seezing them when i put em back

I've always (on every vehicle I've ever owned) used just a tiny dab of Anti-Seize the first time I removed the lugs and never had a problem. I also use it on brake bolts and exhaust hardware. I have this 30 year old crusty bottle of Anti-Seize that will last a lifetime.

Mobile 1 is still the standard fill for all Corvettes so I figure it's good enough for my 4Runner. :bigok:
 
Mobil 1 5w30's on sale this month at Partsource for $33 a 4.4L jug or $7.50/litre. Amsoil/Redline/Lucas/Royal Purple seldom (if ever) go on sale and are always $11-13/litre.
 
Koz is spot on, but he left one detail out. Pretty much all of the "Synthetic" out today is actually dino oil blends. The oil refiners have a very loose definition to work with and so they can make these blends and slap "synthetic" on them and sell them. I think last I check, Redline, Royal Purple, and one other were the only ones that make pure Synthetics.

Group IV base oils are not dino. Amsoil is the other.
