4WD Rear Propeller Shaft (Driveshaft) Clunk/Thunk Noise

My "bump from behind" sensation as outlined in the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) has started to occur more frequently. I set up an appointment and dropped off the Runner this morning on the way into work. It was hard to read the service reps body language after I handed them the TSB.

I am crossing my fingers that they are able to reproduce my experience!

Odds are high they will not be able to reproduce ...

Test drives should always be when you can repeat the issue, and you are with the tech.

Well I just received a voicemail but I didn't reach the rep when I called back. The tone of the voicemail didn't sound good either. philsey may have called this one!

Update: Per my service rep, "your driveshaft is bad" and needs to be replaced. Your estimate for the repair is $761.

When I asked if the part was covered under warranty, I was told that drive shafts are not part of the drive train warranty.

I requested she double check that with her manager and after a brief hold I was told the repair would be covered at no cost to me!

Parts are on order and I will have to bring the Runner back tomorrow for the repair to take place.

Was that checkered flag toyota?

Ugh, I really wish Charles Barker would have had the Limited we ended up getting. I loathe the thought some one at Checkered Flag got my Tundra for the trade in. Always recieved much better service at Charles Barker.

Nope. Priority. In all fairness to the service rep, they did apologize for the communication error several times over the past two days while visiting the service center. Just picked up my Runner all all seems to be in order.

I was however VERY surprised at how quickly they handed me a laundry list of recommended repairs that just slightly exceeded the cost of the warranty repair work they just completed.

man atleast they corrected the mess up. How in the hell do they think a drive shaft isnt in the drive train. What all did they try to recommend?

This is a really easy fix.

Get a grease gun connect it to the slip yoke and pump 40+ times until you see the slip yoke move apart. Yes that is ALOT of grease. But this will fix your clunk.

When I moved into my house years ago my neighbor had a 4th gen 4runner V8 and he had the clunk. I told him let me borrow your car. I pumped alot of grease in his slip yoke and the problem went away.

Before buying a $800 driveshaft buy a $40 grease gun first.

1. Front/Trans/Rear Diff fluid change - I will be doing this myself.
2. Power steering flush
3. Brake system flush
4. New tires ****
5. Alignment on my existing warn out tires which were listed as Green on the check sheet
6. Tire rotation

2 and 3 I am struggling with since they have never been touched from new

4, 5 and 6 are contradictory and will be handled when I need tires...

I have seen the power steering fluid and brake fluid get pretty damn nasty before here. I can see them recommending that based on miles. Tires are hit or miss. Some people will mark green when it is between 4-6/32nd's. I would imagine that the alignment would be done when you put the new tires on. I would recommend an alignment on worn down tires like you are describing.
