I had an alarm in my '96 4Runner, and the only time it ever went off was when the battery in the remote died and I had to open the truck with the car keys. Both times it was in public parking lots, and no one came running to see if I was stealing the vehicle.

Heck, even I think "first day with the new alarm" every time I hear one going off...

I opted not to get the alarm with my new '04. I don't leave valuables in the truck. If someone tries to steal it, it's got an engine immobilizer. If they do manage to swipe it, I've got insurance.

I do that, with my Miata, all the time (leave it unlocked or with the top down...weather permitting). It's soooo easy to get into a convertible, and I don't want them to cut my top. I leave nothing of value in it and the radio has a code that's needed to be input when it's disconnected from the the battery. Never been stolen yet. I carry insurance just in case
