Tail Lights LED Project

OK, let me get this straight.

When you get the 2006 LED tails, there's an LED module with a connector that fits the 2005 (for example) factory brake light wiring harness. But there's just empty holes where the turn signal and reverse lights are.

So, you take off your 2005 tails and pop out the turn signal / reverse bulbs, and take the sockets out too by turning the sockets a 1/4 turn. You then take these sockets and bulbs, and fit them into the same holes in the 2006 tail assembly, and then connect back to the wiring harness.

This is probably a really simple thing, but I just want to understand.

Also, how do you unscrew the top bolt? It looks waaay up there - do you just work it with a long 10mm wrench?

Erik

That's correct. You have to pulls the sockets for the turn signal and reverse and put them into the new tails. As far as the bolt, it's really not that far up. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen it and then unscrew it with your fingers.

^ that's the problem.. MONEY. I won't be doing this project in the near future as I have my JDM taillights on and I love it. $300 for replacement lights with LED? nah. Maybe If I NEED to get them replaced... like being rearended.

I second that emotion! But I do like how they look.

Thanks for all the info. And I second Derek's opinion - the LEDs are about the only thing on the '06 I really want, and they fit, so YEEEEE-HAAA! (ahem)

Wow, these things sure are bright compared to the old ones! Makes my third brake light look really dim. I guess my next project will be finding a way to put LED's in the third brake light. :D

I've Toyota brand rear spoiler with 15 or something like that LEDs. What do you have as for third stop light?

I don't have the spoiler, so I just have the standard third brake light which is basically one light bulb which isn't nearly as bright as the LED's.

Oh... I see...
But wait a minute, you have '05 Sport Edition and do not have a spoiler:confused: Up here in Canada the only one coming without spoiler is SR5.

Alex, you are the man. Thanks to your great directions, I installed both of mine in 15 minutes, and they look great, sooooooooo much better than the originals.

I got mine for $300 shipped from Tom at partznet. He was great to deal with and very prompt.

Alex, thanks again.

I just installed these on my 2003 4runner. There is one item not mentioned. You will need to trim these safety stops on the little grey inserts that come with the lights. Once you do this, its all plug and play! Lights look great!!

I just installed these too on my '05 and I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. Safety stops? Mine bolted right up without any trimming. Am I missing something?

The grey plug on the light assembly would not go into the other grey plug that yoyu have to transplant from the old assembly (where the lightbulb was plugged into)...

It was a 30 second trim, but that did the trick.

Okay, I see, wonder how the '03 would be a little different than the '05. Mine went in without a problem. Anyway.....they sure are nice aren't they?

They are great looking!! I was at a store and a guy in a Lexus GX 470 was very impressed.

This was a great find!!

Question for you guys with the 06 LEDs light. is the red part still pinkest looking like the older stock tail light ?? if not that I would luv to get a set!

Its very bright red - no pink. As a matter of fact, it's so funny. When it's dark, the break lights illuminate the person behind so well, you can tell all the features. You can be seen miles away. This is probably one of the best mods to be done.

Plus, you never have to worry about rear lights not working.

this is fun watching the thread unfold! Keep it up! :)

Hi AlexJet: I could not help noticing your V VT-I emblem and V6 ...where can I get them? and price? I have been trying to do this mod for a while. After looking at your led mod...I am also thinking in changing them. Thanks
