Tail window roll down 1 inch only

I bought a 99 and didn't test the tailgate window before I bought it.stupid me.

There's a small dent on the back where the Toyota emblem is. Literally a cm to the right. it's about quarter in size and 1 cm deep. I was wondering if its the small dent that's preventing the window from rolling down more than an inch.

Is it easy to access through the panel to push the dent out?

It's easy for me, your skill level will dictate how hard it is for you. There is a panel with a lot of bolts behind the trim panel, once you remove that, it should be pretty obvious.

The dent doesn't sound like it would impede the window, but take it apart and look. Let us know!
 
Open it and look. Mine didn't work when I bought it either, took about 5 minutes to take apart and diagnose. In my a piece had rattled loose inside and was in the way of the window.

I had the same exact issue on my previous gen 3. After opening it up it was pretty obvious and easily fixed.
 
Mine had the standard regulator issues (small track rollers located inside the regulator) but would still only go down ~1/2 way. After some digging, I found out that the wiring loom that runs down the drivers side (maybe) was actually letting the window rest on it/push on it and not go down any further. Needless to say, I moved the wiring harness out of the way and its been working great since.

If things like that can stop the window on it's tracks then im starting to think the dent is the problem.

my 85 had a similar issue. it would tug against the harness, and ended up breaking the connector at the switch. so if the wire moved just right, it would disconnect the circuit and the window would stop.
 
Went to take a picture. . I guess its bigger than what i remembered and closer to center of emblem

Are you using the interior switch? Any different when you use the key in the tailgate? I don't have the factory key fob, but I believe you can roll down the rear window using it as well; same results?

Any noises just before or when it stops?
 
Warpage of the door, however minor, could also result in the guide rails being out of alignment.

If possible, pull the motor and see if the window moves freely the whole distance.

Another thing also, broken motor fear maybe?
 
Went and took the interior panel off and it is impossible to reach the dent.

By looking at all the tracks and gears, i do not see any obstructions. I even thought it might have been the rear wiper not seated correctly but it made no difference.

I hear the relay click and the window moves down about an inch then everything stops. The motor doesnt attempt to keep going.

Anyone ever experience this? Any input?
 
I know things like this not working correctly are aggravating, especially when the vehicle is new to you. I suppose if you want to continue with trying to get it to work, your going to have to start messing with it and figure out what's wrong.

On the other hand, you could just stop worrying about it and leave it alone. I've had a 4Runner for 9 years and I can tell you that I've rolled the window down about 5 times total. Two of those times was just to see it work. So, three real uses in 9 years. I could've done without it.

Good luck and post back if you find out what is wrong and how you fixed it so others can learn. Too many people never follow up.
 
I would check with the key to see if it will go down like others have said, this should tell you if it is the switch itself up front that is bad or something in between. To test put your key in the hatch door, then turn and hold to the left (unlock) for down. Then to put up turn to the right (lock) and hold. I had an Altima that had a dirty rocker switch that would go in and out, took the switch apart to clean and ta da!

Like the last poster said, once you do figure it out let us know the solution so others who might have the same issue can learn. Good luck!

Oh and [MENTION=98989]Parker1938[/MENTION], I put down my rear window every day. It blows air from the rear to the front, so with the front windows down it is like "surround air" immersing your inner being with a flow of air that will tickle your fancy!

Update: for anyone that has a ding or dent on their lift gate and the windows doesn't work or roll down much- for me, it was the wiper motor that obstructed the window from rolling down. I pried at it to push it back into place and it was fixed. Took some time to message it back.
