In my search for the perfect 4runner, someone told me to check out Grand Cherokees..... I know this topic has been discussed before, but I need reassurance that the 4runner is the right choice. I know how unreliable the Grand Cherokee is, and how its also a unibody vehicle, but the only thing calling me to it is the price.... I am currently in a 2006 Rav4 Sport V6 4WD. I am used to plain and simple options, which I love about the SR5 I have been eyeballing. I just need to I think hear it again how the 4Runner will be a better long term investment and have the same reliability my Rav4 gave me. Also I have a question, I am looking at a 2014 SR5 with 29k miles and its listed at around 29k, is that about the going average for one now? Thanks in advance guys, this has really been killing me that I even contemplated the Heep... I mean Jeep... :bash:

I've never owed more money on my 4Runner than it is worth. And, I put no money down on it. You won't ever be able to do that with a jgc. If you hate the jgc you won't be able to resell it without taking a huge financial hit.
 
Thanks for some doses of reality fellas. I truly love Toyota, and since I was in highschool when I saw them coming out with the new 4runner (Yes, I am that young (23)), I always said it was my dream car and that I would have it. I have my Rav4 to trade in along with about 5000 cash. I think I am having buyers remorse without even buying it. I feel once I can look out into my driveway and see it sitting there, knowing its mine, I will feel much better. Hoping everything works out this weekend and I can try to bargain with the dealer some.
 
You will end up in a 4runner eventually regardless of what you actually end up buying now. The Jeep will inevitably have issues, they all do. If you want the 4runner now, you'll probably want it later.

I looked everywhere for a Silver 2012 Trail for a long time but never found one. I ended up postponing my search for the 4runner and drove my new (at the time) Nissan Frontier, but I ended up back at the dealership looking at 4runners again a year later.

You get what you pay for. I had a 2014 gc and it was in the shop 10 times in less than a year before we decided to trade it in for a 2015 t4r. The gc was the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned.

I have owned the T4r for a year now and the only reason it has been to the shop is for the free oil changes and tire rotations.

Simplify your life. Spend the extra money to buy a good product.

Oh and the gc value dropped 8 grand in the year I had it when I traded it in. I lost my entire down payment because they don't hold any value.

These are the exact things I wanted to hear! Screw it, I know I will need to make high monthly payments and have high insurance due to my age, but I don't care. This is the truck I truly want and what good is money just sitting there in the bank. I am young so I might as well enjoy myself while I can, as you never know what will happen in life. Thanks for the support and reasonings guys/gals. I will update you all come Saturday

In the hopes of simplifying the heart of your posted dilemma, I've removed all of the unnecessary "filler words" that perhaps you might re-read the issue and come up with a much more productive solution:

Have you considered this: "Since you're already fully aware that the 'Jeep Grand Cherokee' has had notably remarkable issues with it's reliability and a substantially tarnished reputation as a result, perhaps consider poking around a bit for a Pre-owned, Toyota Certified, 2012-2013 4Runner (w/low mileage). Playing your cards right and shopping around a bit, you'll likely end-up with a highly reliable, fine looking vehicle, and... for much less than you would pay for a new JGC "Shop dweller"! ...just my 0.000000.05 cents!"

I have absolutely considered it. I found a 2014 CPO with 21k miles for just under 29k before bargaining. Now to try to get the dealer to work with me and actually go see it on Saturday when I have my day off for the week!
 
This made me curious, so I looked up my KBB value (NADA site was not working). 2012 Trail in very good condition w/ KDSS and 55k - in CO. $29k on the private market. I owe $13k, having done a slight over-paymernt every month. That's frigging insane. I paid $36K.....in 2012. Neither vehicle is an "investment" in the strictest terms. One is better on road, has more features and is "trail rated". The other is a 4Runner.

If you plan to keep it for a while, you should just buy brand new at that point.
I talked them down to 31600 on a base sr5. For 2600 I would rather just buy brand new.

And you said that the appeal of the jeep was the price. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

I purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland in June 2013. It truly was a pleasure to own and drive. I absolutely loved the vehicle. I had an opportunity come up in my career in June 2014 (exactly one year after purchase) and the Jeep was paid off so I needed to get my equity out of it and ended up trading it in on a car in the $20,000 range. I traded in the Jeep and got the car and received a check back for the difference between the new car value and the Jeeps value.

This is when I realized just how poorly the Jeep Grand Cherokee holds it's value. I visited about 6 or 8 different dealers over a couple days to have the Jeep appraised to trade in on a vehicle the dealer had in stock. The best offer I got was over $10,000 less what I paid for the Jeep and I paid $500 over invoice for it! The Grand Cherokee lost over $10,000 in value in one year.

A couple weeks ago I was ready to get back into a truck or suv and wanted an ecodiesel Grand Cherokee. The second I started looking at them it hit me...what in the world was I doing looking at a vehicle that will lose that much value that fast! Didn't I learn my lesson the first time?!?! Well the sales manager at the dealership I was at personally had just ordered a TRD off road Tacoma and was telling me about it so I walked across the street and looked around their Toyota store. This is when they informed me they had a TRD PRO 4 Runner coming in within the next couple weeks. My family has owned multiple Toyota's and always loved them. We are a family of mechanics so I know how reliable Toyota's are as well as the resale value they hold.

If money means anything to you, go with the 4 Runner hands down. If money isn't a concern, the Grand Cherokee, in my opinion, is worth looking at.
 
don't mistake this as any kind of endorsement for the jeep, but any vehicle is going to have a shit trade in value vs. the private party value. trading a vehicle in to the dealer is a really poor way to get the equity out of it.

I was offered 5k more than what i paid. 2016-TRD-Pro, 4,500 miles, I only buy Toyota/Lexus because you wont take a bath when it comes time to sell it.
