TCMach's Build Thread

Whitson will sell you a kit to build the rack?

I'm interested in knowing this too.

If so how much did it run you if you don't mind me asking? And what all did it come with?

This is a new kit from josh. Were working on figuring out the assembly of the rack along with the creation of an easy to build jig so that the rack will have the same curvature that it has if you were to order it fully built. I'll be posting alot more pictures once I have it finished.

I'll go ahead and tag Whitson Metalworks so he can chime in if he feels like

I'm glad you're finally going to do something with that thing, dang! You'll have the only one for quite a while, thats for sure. I'm so backed up with rack orders it makes me sick, I really need a team of people to help. For anyone interested, certainly follow this build. There are so many nuances and tweaks to building one of these its almost impossible to explain. My process even takes into account how the welding heat will pull the metal this way or that way (which is different from MIG to TIG). its an involved thing and i'm excited to see the results of one built in another garage!

So I finally finished rebuilding my Kings. Got in and replaced all the seals, o-rings, and wipers, checked the wear bands, all that fun stuff. Honestly it wasn't to hard. I had a couple moments where I was confused but a quick email to King sorted me out. I have to say that Kings customer service is second to none. Every time I called I got somebody who transferred me to the right department instantly. No waiting, no bs. After that I sent a couple emails back about specifications and other random questions and they were all answered right away and usually in way more detail than I needed (special thanks to Mark Basham my guru over at King).

Now I just have to get them charged and wait for my 700# springs to come in. Anybody want some Toytec Eibach coils on 5100s?

Coming apart

Shaft pulled, valving and stuff is already pulled off in this pic. Forgot to take one with it all on the shaft

All apart and laid out in order

Piston

After this I pulled the internal floating piston because the previous owner said that when he pulled them they didn't dampen as well. I assumed the IFP o-ring was blown thus causing the nitrogen to bleed into the main chamber. Safe to say I was right. Looks like a blown o-ring to me (dont mind my dishes :D)

All done and ready for nitrogen and springs

You could get some but you have rocks to buy hahaha

What made you decide to go with 700lb springs? Sorry if you posted that and I missed it.

I don't think I did haha. So my choice was based on NateMob good experience with them. Also BigFishAllDay is running 700s now and likes them. Our trucks are built similarly so I said what the hell and went for it. Plus I wanted something a little stiffer than the 620 pound eibachs I'm running at the moment and 650 just didn't seem like it would be a big enough difference (I realize there's more to it than just the coil but it's a good start)

Well theyre on. First impressions is that they ride better than anything I've had on the truck by far. Rear end feels soft and not to planted anymore. Will be dealing with that this summer (rear Kings and 861s). 700lb coils were the right way to go. They ride great and I feel like anything less than this would have been too soft

only one picture for now because it was dark but more to come in the driveway and in Moab

Psssssssh.... 10 years later. :bored:

Have fun in Moab, you lucky bastage. Wish I could have gone with you guys, but I'm stuck here at work covering shifts for someone who took vacation.

BTW, I'll be in Ft. Collins 5/28-31 for a wedding. We should try to grab a beer or something.

Hey I got it done before Moab thats all that counts :D Beer sounds like a plan to me. Chances are i'll be around here or a bit south depending on what internship I can pull off.

Speaking of Moab I should have listened to you about cutting up the spare tire carrier. I did a v-notch similar to the one you tweaked yours on and drug the spare a little. I'm kinda disappointed with how much it tweaked the whole swing out. Definitely didnt hold up as well as the shrockworks on EatonKyleH truck on the same notch, which didnt change at all. I tweaked the tire carrier section itself, the mounting bracket for the carrier section, the angled section of the swing out on the passenger side also bent. Oh and my tailgate :loco:

Overall Moab was a killer trip. Probably my favorite outing so far. It was pretty cool having the main core of us, EatonKyleH Fishwerks Tracy (who will be on here soon showing up the 4th gen guys) and I, and then picking up people for every trail. We did Metal Masher the first day with a first gen pickup. Kane Creek the next day with TBuzz , and Sevenmile Rim with all the optional stuff including wipe-out hill the last day with ARC , 99 sr5 highlander , and another 3rd gen who I'm not sure is on here. Pictures and video are on the big Canons and GoPros so I dont have much to show right now but I took a few iPhone pics of this flex on Metal Masher. Anybody who thinks you can't stuff 700lb coils is wrong haha.

Crap, dude!!! That sucks. Any pics of said damage? I really wish I could have made the trip with you guys, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the pictures/video.

I forgot to ask, what valving are you running on your kings?
Whatever the stock valving is. Since I bought them blown out I never got a chance to ride on them so I decided to leave them stock while I figured out what spring rate I wanted.

Had a great day with you guys, can't wait to see all the pics and videos.
We have plenty of pictures thats for sure! Thanks again for coming out, I had a blast wheeling with you and I probably wouldn't have done wipeout hill if you hadn't gone first. By the way, we got Tracys truck towed to Western Slope Toyota in Grand Junction. Its gonna get fixed there and then he is going to drive back out and grab it. Probably on Friday or Saturday

I took a bunch today, I'll post more when I get all my pictures together but here are a couple. Not really mad about the dent, its not that bad. Looks worse in the pictures because my truck still looks like Moab. I'm going to work up an email to CBI. I'm not looking for anything for my truck but maybe they can add a gusset or rework the tire piece since a few of us have had issues smacking them on things.

Right now I'm stuck between fixing what I have and reworking the tire piece, or hacking the whole thing off the main arm and doing my own thing. Something like Crozhawks 4th gen bumper with the exterior mounting and skid plate on the bottom but on a swing out.

Ouch!!! I'd be pissed, Tyler. I've always worried about that exact situation with my CBI. The "angle iron" setup they use for the tire carrier just is not as sturdy as full square/round tube. I think the fact that the upright is not fully boxed also contributes to the wiggle off the tire that we've all become familiar with.

...or hacking the whole thing off the main arm and doing my own thing.

This is where I'm headed. I've already started collecting parts. I'm going to cut everything off the swing arm and start from scratch.

This was taken after learning how to light paint with long exposure about 5 minutes before. Not half bad. Focus is a little off but its the best one I've come across so far.

I thought I would be mad. But I wasnt. As far as body damage goes its very minor, and I knew it was an issue and I didnt fix it so I can only blame myself. Plus its going to light my fire enough to hack it up and fix it. I think I might have to start bare. Not only is that mounting bracket bent backwards but its also buckled a bit right on that lower bolt. I doubt I'll be able to bend it back and I currently have to open my swingout way farther for the hatch to clear the tire. Looks like me and the angle grinder are going to become good friends

When I get to CO maybe I can talk you into helping me rebuild my sway-a-way co's ;)

Sucks to hear about the tire carrier.. I dread doing the same thing to mine all the time.
