TCMach's Build Thread

I. Want. Your. Kings. gimme. :ybrick: purchasing a 99' highlander later this month and I need a suspension to start!

Do it! The Kings are probably the best money I've ever thrown at this truck. Just learned my 5100s are blown out in the rear so look for a rear out boarded King shocks update possibly later this fall.

So much slacking going on in this thread.

I know that you're starting your career, and that you've taken an internship (IIRC), and that you're commuting, and wearing your adult pants and all that, but remember....

You are responsible for keeping this build moving forward, and that is what is most important right now.

I have to agree with the slacking. The truck has a few changes on it for sure. When I get it back from getting my new swing out fabricated I will take some pictures of all the changes :D

You going to the Jambo right? It's last minute but I will probably register today or tomorrow. Wish I could run iron chest with you guys but I don't think I can request Friday this late in the game. But who knows.

Looks horrible remove the entire bumper immediately and leave it outside my house for disposal.

You gonna drive the 8 hours back here to get it? Haha.

Anyways. Since nobody liked my picture (besides cdrewferd thanks for making me feel loved man), I didn't clean my truck and you all get iPhone pics in a parking lot instead of nice Canon pictures with good scenery.

On to the bumper. First things first, the CBI bumper is a fantastic bumper. It is really great for what it does, but when you push it past its comfort zone (like crawling) it really shows its weaknesses. Thus when I blasted it in Moab I decided I needed to redo the swingout portion.

These were the issues I felt like needed fixing in order for the bumper to be perfect for my situation.
1. Better departure angle. The CBI leaves a lot to be desired in this aspect
2. More secure tire mounting. The tire carrier portion of the CBI is a modular piece which is good for adjust-ability but bad when you bash it. It has room to move on its mounts which led to two nice dents on my tailgate
3. Tire coverage. When I drug the tire on notch in Moab the tire drug and seemed to stick on the rock in my opinion. Its probably not that big of a deal but my knowledge of friction says a piece of metal will slide easier than a piece of rubber
4. Minimalist. The longer I had the full swingout the more I felt like it covered too much of the hatch and took away from the look of the truck. So I wanted something that left more of the truck visible.

Now it came to the actual fabrication of the bumper. I had plans to do it myself but I moved and no longer have a garage so that was out of the question. So I put it on the back burner. When I moved I put some of my tools on craigslist. I get an email from a guy who wants my JET bandsaw, turns out its Glade, who was the owner and builder of this truck, which I'm sure you all remember.

Now he has his own fab shop called 52Eighty Performance. We got to talking and plans were put into motion. We ended on a design that had a rear structure for the tire to mount to, and a outer stinger to protect the tire and act as a skid. Onto the pictures. These first ones are updates from Glade, who was awesome to deal with and moved some stuff around so he could get my truck finished before the Jamboree.

Starting off.

Departure angle comparison, notice how tight the tire is to the main bumper crossmember now, where with the old bumper it was crossmember, hilift, then tire way out there

That looks pretty good.

Three things...

1. It looks like it would be an awkward maneuver getting that tire off the mount with the stinger folded down and out. How much does it get in the way?

2. Did you guys build in enough clearance for the stinger to clear a 35" tire when closed. You never know what the future holds. (it looks like there's enough room in the pics)

3. Why didn't you have him replace that sh#tty latching mechanism with something better.

Thanks man. Three questions deserve three answers.

1. Actually no its really easy. The pictures are kind of deceiving on how far it sticks out when folded down. I can easily work around the tire with the stinger folded away. I'll get a picture from the side with the stinger down tomorrow

2. No, If I ever go 35s I will be running the tallest 255/85 I can find as a spare. Much like Dirtco does. I wont be doing a 5 tire rotation then but weight and size wise the 255/85 is the way to go.

3. Time and money. This whole swing out redo was decided upon the last week in July and with his busy schedule I was happy enough to get the whole thing finished by the Jambo. Also I have undone the ol' auger so many times it just doesnt bother me. A new latch would definitely be awesome and easier to use, but I would rather put the money I save on the latch and fab time on some new 10" King shocks with reservoirs

Makes sense to me. You'll give it run for it's money Saturday on Chinaman's... the left and middle lines on Whale's Tail will check that clearance for you real quick.

That looks great! I cannot believe you ran the CBI carrier so low. Mine is wayyyy up there to get the clearance better. Not that I have ever come close to needing it so far up, the wheeling I do.

Thanks man. Actually when I drug it in Moab it was actually two notches higher than that just for the trip and it didn't make a difference haha. I never felt comfortable running the carrier that high since it just increases the lever arm. I think that's part of the reason why mine bent as much as it did. So it's great as long as you don't hit it. But if you do that lever arm will destroy the carrier

Awesome work on the tire carrier. Im still carrying my 285 spare inside the truck which sucks. I started planning out a tire carrier for my 4xinnovations bumper back in April but decided against it due to the weight, clearance, etc.

Your design looks like its solved a lot of these issues.

Do you plan to incorporate a hilift mount into it?

Thanks man. After I busted the old carrier I had the spare inside and I hated it so much haha. Yea time will tell but I feel really good about this design and what I'll be able to clear with it. Obviously no bumper is the best clearance but hopefully this gets me into all the places I want to be.

No hilift spot on the bumper. It could be incorporated pretty easily, probably a vertical mount or something of the sort. But I'll end up keeping mine on the roof rack so it's out of the way. I also need a new one because I drug the old one on so many rocks it no longer works without a hammer to bump it up every notch.

Hey, TCMach with the new tire carrier does your tire still move a lot on bumpy roads like the CBI does? I'm sure you know the "rocking" movement I am talking about.

Mine probably isn't the truck to look at for that. Even before I changed the swing out up I was noticing it getting worse so I'm pretty sure my brass bushings are toasted. But that being said, it has gotten better with the new carrier. I also have a lot less sag on the arm than I had before. I used to have to pull up on it noticeable to get it to set on that little rubber block they provide and now it just glides on.

Well, I guess I should update this.....

You may notice a couple changes since I last posted. Namely being the King 2.0x10 resi shocks in the back of the truck. Also swapped to OME 861s.

Kings. Basically a racetruck now.

How are the outboard shocks as far as articulation as apposed to leaving inboard in the factory location?

I have been curious about this as I would love to get more vertical travel for desert and dunes.
Any chance of getting a 12" in there and being able to use all of the travel?
