I'm not very happy with this either, but when I got my 4Runner I ended up at the dealer with two cars, so the salesman had to follow me home in it. Since I was in my Mini JCW, I figured the safest bet was to let him drive the 4Runner. Also, remember, others will have already driven your new car before you purchase it, so it isn't such a big deal that someone else drives it after you purchase it.

True, sometimes is can't be helped. And really it's very unlikely that there are any negative effects, especially since break-in isn't nearly as important these days.
However, I've seen how some of these guys dog out dealer cars when no one is looking. In fact I saw some kid literally slide into a gravel parking lot this past Friday while I was getting my windows tinted. He was a porter dropping off a new 5 series for a local BMW dealer.
Luckily I got my T4R with 4 miles on the clock. I've bought others though with as much 150 and not had a problem (did get something out of it though in negotiations

I had never seen a new car with only 1 mile on it before.

Many dealerships will not do contract at your house because its considered solicitation, thus some states have a 3-day cool off period if they sign at your house. You can probably find a smaller dealership that may be willing to do that. But then in those case, your deal will probably not be as good of a deal as buying from a volume dealer.
But this goes to show that a good deal is a perception of where you live among other factors..
