Teach me to 4runner

Im pretty new to my 4runner but here is what im wondering..why is it everytime i go threw something slippery teh pedals vibrate and theres beeping and aweful noise? I have a 2005 sr5 v8 4x4. It has a center locking differential but I am not to sure how to use that and dont want to break it? Can anyone help teach me? Ill post pics soon! Have all black with black sr5 rims powedercoated (looks slick). Sadly no lift yet :(:thanks:

Its the VSC system telling you it is working and that the tires are slipping and or the truck is sliding sideways. Center dif lock locks the front and rear axle together allowing them to spin at the same exact speed. Not recommended for pavement. I use mine in muddy terrain.
 
OHH thats what that is! Thanks a ton! Also.. when going though dry dirt or gravel trails or over rocks and stuff does the vsc mess it up? Or will it go off but it is helping me tackle whatever obstacle im attempting?
 
Its decently helpful... that's more than I say about most VSC/Trac systems... I threw my 4Runner in the mud while it was raining and the VSC kicked in a lot, but was pretty helpful at keepin the truck driving... well more sliding in the right direction... which reminds me... need to get some Toyo Country tires.

What type of tires are good ones? Im looking for new ones but i want them to be able to fit on the 4runner as is.

I had both BFG AT (All Terrains) and now have Nitto Terra Grapplers AT and both are excellent tires and give it that rugged look. They are both more aggressive than the stock tires you may have now and you should be able get either one in the stock size or maybe even one size larger!

Duratracks look cool but I don't have experience with them.

Check other posts too on tires!

Coworker has BFGon his FJ, says he likes them. Thinking about picking up a set of Toyo Open Country M/T when my Dunlops wear out.

If you do not engage your center locker it will leave you wondering "what in the hell?". Turn the locker on and it eliminates the VSC system altogether and leaves Atrac on making the 4runner very capable.

glad to hear I am not the only one who didn't know what that was. I had that happen to me a week ago when we got 10" of snow (first snowfall for me and my 4runner). I assumed it was the VSC but I feel better now that I know it was the VSC.
 
if u dont like it, u can do the vsc off mod or lock center diff. momentarily if in snow or mud.

VSC mod is a nice option but keep in mind if you do this you wont have any stability control for the truck should you need. I, personally, just live with it.
 
I've had several sets of Bridgestone Dueler ATs through the years. They wear well. I currently have some Kumho SAT KL61. Awesome traction and very quiet for an AT tire.
