Tell me about the 2013 4runner LTD 4WD

Owned a paid for 4th Gen 4Runner with only 50K miles - I'm in a 5th Gen now only because it was mandated by my accountant as a no brainer. My 2011 Limited was on the IRS list back then. How tax law changed since 2011 I do not know.

A smarter person than me will need to explain the in and outs because all this stuff is now beyond me. My taxes this year are 58 pages long and at this point I just sign where they say and write the checks indicated. However the accountant knows his stuff because we just finished at full IRS audit and I'm not in jail.

Same boat Dave...same name too. I'm assuming you got the ltd? Do u have 3rd row? Because there is another catch which is that you have to have 6ft storage space along w 6000 lbs.

The section 179 depreciation was actually more recently changed at the end of 2012. This is honestly one big reason I originally went to the 4runner myself. It allowed a purchaser to take a very large tax deduction for a purchased and placed in service vehicle over 6000 lbs as long as it met certain criteria. Here is a link that can explain it Business Vehicles - Section 179 Deductions | Section179.Org. However, it is only really for people who can itemize deductions for work (self-employed). The vehicle list is mush smaller after 2011 so that may be what the other posts have been referring to changes for 2011. For 2013 the extra deduction of 50% of the value associated with business use over the $25k is no longer and only a 20% can be taken. Still better than the $11,xxx for other vehicles. Assuming 100% business use a $40k purchase could have a business deduction of $25k+(50% of $15k=$7.5)+(20% of $7.5k)=$34k business deduction for 2012. Too late now though as purchase would have to have been by 12/31/12 for 2012. 2013 would be reduced by 6k of deduction. Still qualifies for $25k+(20% of the difference between balance and purchase). Tax, title and tax can also increase the deduction as well as parts/maint.
Wow you've pretty much got it down. I think they're coming out w new list after 4/15/13

With regards to engineer, I was just returning the favor. I fight ice with ice.

What part of "test drive" did you not understand? You asked for differences, I said test drive so you can see for yourself. Wait a minute....oh, it's EASIER to ask than go do for yourself. I get it now!

P.S. I don't think you would know what to do with that specific bike if you had one. (ice with ice lol)

Or dik w dik if you like that better, you may I dunno but I went with more pc as I think you and I still have a chance. I haven't given up on us, yet!

Ps. I'd probably sit down and pedal on it and if that doesn't work, I'd use it as a permanent bumper guard and if that doesn't work, return it to Walmart for a partial credit due to mfg defect.

One thing I wanted to ask, did you guys all purchase extended warranty? I ask because I'd never buy another Mdx without it

You're fine. As you probably know by now you are the 1,356th person to ask the differences between a 4Runner and everything else lol. I know I am a bit short with answers sometimes but the most common mistake I see on here is some people impulse buy without a proper test drive and the 4Runner is a lot different than a common crossover vehicle like your MDX, aka Pilot, aka Odyssey, and aka Ridgeline with a few minor variants. It rides different, handles different, brakes different and a few other "differents" like the back glass goes up and down! Anyway, go to the Toyota website and use the compare screen to see the obvious differences like cargo capacity and turning radius, etc. Then drive drive DRIVE the thing to be sure you like it. As long as you aren't a dumba$$ we will get along just fine. I have a low tolerance for those.

Oh, see that little button over to the right of the "quote" button in the lower right of your posts? The one with a picture of two documents and a "+" sign? If you click that button on every post you want to respond to it will "multi quote" them in one post lol and save you time.

Lololol, thx. I'm not a dumbas per se but with this internet thingy, I dunno I sometimes like to come off as one, I have no idea why, it's the internet. Yes I know this question must come up a lot but without some of us, where will you be? Cricket city?

Coming on here as a new member and insulting a senior member (1engineer) that always gives great info and actually knows what he is talking about is not gonna get you much help.

Try using the search function and you'll find all the info you need.....

Test drive is common sense. Even corky would go for a test drive before buying. I just wanted to know some basic insights and what to look for during a test drive as I hate dealing car salesman.

You would be surprised how many don't test drive. Common sense? Sadly in today's world that is a dying art.

.... did you guys all purchase extended warranty?

WAG is that 20% of us did, and that very few of those would feel the need to do it again (includes me).

However if you do, some searching will disclose how to do it for cheap.

.... I ask because I'd never buy another Mdx without it

Guess that tells me how you like the MDX.

Lastly, here's how to multi-post. Click the (+) on each post to reply to, until the last one, then use "Quote". (Or not, and risk the wrath of 1engineer )

This may be common sense but, as per the comments about common sense above, I will post. The 4Runner does not weigh 6,000lbs. It comes in around a max of 4,800 (LTD w/ 3rd row). The 6,000lbs tax criteria refers to GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), which includes a fully loaded vehicle + tongue weight on a trailer aka how much weight the vehicle can withstand including the weight of the vehicle itself.

There is one thing I wanted to know. While ago, I was told of a story where a person got into an accident driving a 4runner on the street. I don't know the exact details but I guess the investigator told him that the accident was worse than it needed to be because it was a full time 4wd vs AWD. Do you guys know anything about this? If full time 4wd more dangerous than part time awd in a case of accident?

No. I can think of no possible condition where 4wd could make an accident "worse" than AWD. Now, the absence or presence of assist controls such as VSC (VSA for you Honda boys) could change the dynamics. but not 4WD or AWD.

Ok thanks. This would've been back in 1999 or 2000 maybe they didn't have vsc? I wanna say that the guy told me the all 4brakes so it braked a lot more or the opposite all 4 wheel spin so faster momentum, or something causing a car to rollover or land on its side.

So that's never been a concern around here?

Btw this would've been an insider info unspoken type over after work beerbecause he was accident investigative line of work and that he'd never recommend full time 4wd SUV.

Was he refering to AWD, full time 4WD or part time 4WD? There are differences in these systems and between brands. Some SUV's back in the day were more prone to rollover, mostly due to a high center of gravity, but the T4R has never been one of them.

I stand by my original statement with a caveat: Ignorance could play a part and it requires a little bit more knowledge to use 4WD instead of Ron's Popeil's "Set It And Forget It" attitude of AWD. With that said, in 14 years technology has grown by leaps and bounds in vehicles (1997 - Mercedes first used it and 2004 Toyota had it in all their SUV's.) and today's VSC will correct a lot of the mistakes of a driver. This should be the least of your worries.
