Tell me where to stick it! My aftermarket Transmission Sensor that is...

Before I sober up and start this project... wondering where you would put the temp sensor for this aftermarket Transmission Temp Gauge.

2002 4Runner 3rd Gen.

I'm putting in an inline Magnafine and a B&M Cooler. Not the spin on filter... so I won't have that option.

A picture would be nice if you got one!

Why not just use the factory installed one in combination with your favorite BT device off the ODB2 connection & favorite software? :hippie:

Personal prefrence?

I'd rather have the guages. I can't always keep my phone hooked up to watch stuff, and I'm too broke to afford a tablet, BT adapter, software licenses, ect ect to be able to run it.

OP, have you done a Google search?

I would say find a guage pod, but those seem to be hard to find, that actually FIT the 4Runner.

You could run it under the radio, where that blank part is on the radio bezel.

Choice is yours man. Just gotta think of somewhere where it'll look good.

Yessir. Me like gauges. Don't want to monkey around with my phone... but those do look fun.

Here is what I got off the Auto Meter site.

"Short Sweep Electric Temp. Gauge Sender (250, 300, and 340 deg.)
1/8" NPT. Includes 3/8" NPT and 1/2" NPT adapter fittings. DIRECT REPLACEMENT FOR ALL CURRENT AUTO METER SHORT SWEEP ELECTRIC GAUGES. Not Compatible with Auto Gage products."

OH, and they have a shallow depth version if needed

Ok, so you need a bung to screw that into. You can find a fitting or make one. The hardware store should have a T fitting with female NPT threads - stick the temp sensor in the side, and screw barbed fittings into the ends. Use some kind of oil and gas resistant thread sealer on the threads. Ziptie or screw-clamp that setup somewhere near the trans. Run the hose carrying fluid from the trans to the sensor assembly, and then out the other side to the cooler.

Yes, that would certainly work and I might go that way... I did see something about a Test Port on the T4R tranny... maybe I should rephrase.

Is there a test port?
Where is it?
How deep is it? Do I need the SHALLOW sensor?
Has anyone else used it with a sensor?

Hmmm... there is a "Plug for Hydraulic Test"....

Looks like it's kinda at the top...
Trannies are full of fluid right? no matter where you put it... it should have fluid...

I could use the T adapter in the hose to the B&M Cooler. The only thing that gives me pause is... In my opinion the fewer hose clamps the better and that would introduce at least 2. It would be best to screw it right into the transmission.

I put mine just after the hard line coming from the transmission. I would of like to put it right as the oil left the transmission but not willing to take the time or do the work.

I would put it in the cooler return line as close to the trans as possible just or wire running ease. Imo after the cooler will tell you the lowest temp the trans is seeing and if that is too high thats not good. In a perfect world right in the the trans cooler itself i think would be ideal but thatbis not very possible or practical. Maybe there is a trans coller made with a temp sensor bung on it. I amy also be totally crazy and wrong on my sensor location. :brick:

Also, I checked out your photo bucket and saw where you put your gauges... nice. That is what I plan to do as I too have a 4 x 2 auto so right in front of the gear selector seems good.

I work at walmart and well be having cheap 30 dollar tablets for blackfriday. Just get one of those and a obd 2 reader off of ebay or amazon. I only paid 5 bucks for mine and it's great! I have the same year 4runner so I am too interested in this gauge. I hate always having that reader hooked up. I've heard a couple people drain their batteries after several days. And yeah looking at a tablet or phone is more complicated, this is more straight forward and clean.

The clamps are stainless steel and came with a piece of machinery that was installed where I work and there were a lot of them left over. They are made in Germany and are called safety clamps. I contacted the manufacturer and asked about buying some and they have a 100 pc minimum at about $7.00 each, so I'll not get any more of those.
