Tell me why I shouldn't do it!

Don't get me wrong, I think the SS 1.2 is a very, very good lift. However I personally think SS's site has a tendancy to bash the other products out there. I love my suspension, but if I listened to what SS had to say about my OME setup, my CVs should be popping out of my diff/hubs all the time off road because of the "excessive" droop. However, I don't even run sway bars and even after years of trail abuse, I've had zero problems. Hmmm...
 
I stand corrected. They don't look like the typical height adjustable strut with the screw collar.
But didn't someone say with the lift springs you set the strut for stock lift anyways? So the adjustment is useless..?

Agree, that was a huge turn off for me. Well that and the price.

I think the OME ride fine in the front (881's with TO spacer). But its the rear that kills it. To be completely honest I think the 890's ride harsh when unloaded. I would source some LC coils if they didnt give so much damn rake...

i pretty much agree, but you have to admit other's have had problems with lifting and CV's, it does happen, enough to freak out about, maybe-maybe not,
but it is worth mentioning as a possibility and in my post above that's all i'm trying to do, is just say hey, you probably don't have to worry about this but
some people have had problems and valving in a shock is important, sure any shock will work with any car or suv provided the mounts line up. but, depending if you care about ride or not there are a myriad of other things that factor into how a shock is valved or even if it's valved at all, so in short valving will have an effect, enough to notice or care about? i don't know never played with those shocks just making the op aware of the possibilities
of valving difference and potentially what may happen, i'm not yelling fire and not saying he shouldn't get them, i'm just saying i wouldn't because there is a small issue there and i'm a big girl and would rather try the thing that is 100% rather then thing that is 80% or even 90% going to work.

so yeah man, like i said i have no experience with those shocks for real and even have a spare set of them sitting in my garage but haven't/wont use them so i have no real world information to help you, it's just something that i have heard from a few people and have read about on occasion. It does seem to be fine for most people though.
 
I'm not really sure how they valve the D558's, the only "specially" valved shock, the 5125 is easily ordered from someone else. its the BE5-6252-H5 shock.

i have confirmed this with a few other suspension dealers apparently even 1 digit difference in the part number can be a completely different shock due to the valving, with that said though there are people out there who run this set-up and seem pretty happy, personally i want the right parts for my truck and want to be confident that i'm going to be happy the first time.

i have no personal experience with the shocks you have listed and everything i know is pure hearsay but makes sense, so do what you will with the info i listed.

I have no idea what kind of bull crap all that hub bub is about the D558 not being designed for our vehicle, and being designed for a taco. News flash: the front end is the exact same thing as our 4Runner with the exception of not having the same headlights and bumpers. Sonoran Steel is just spoon feeding people a bunch of bullcrap. I run these 5100 shock and I love them.

The body of the shock has three (I have five on mine) channels etched in, there is a metal "C" ring that you place in whichever slot you want the height set to. You then slide the collar over the shock body and the ring holds the collar in place, then you install the coil, compress, install the top plates and your done.

You can't really see them in the pic above, you can barely see one of the rings on the lower shock close to the lowest wind

:iagree: The OME shocks are the same for the 4runner and taco but no one ever says anything about that
 
I've never run the tacoma shocks but have read that they are "bouncy" but that is someone's opinion so take it w/ a grain of salt. I chose the Tundra adjustable shocks b/c they have more adjustment options (5 compared to 3) and they were cheaper! Plus to me it made sense to use the Tundra bilies since I was using Tundra coils...ya know:cheers:
 
The Verdict

I haven't been able to find anyone whos running bilsteins5100s with OME 881s.

There seems to be alot of differences in opinions...

So I think I'm going just to be the guinea pig on this. :thumb3:

If I don't like the feel I can always just sell the OMEs and buy the progressive coils from ToyTec.

The closest thing I know of personally is a guy who's running OME 882s on Billies. He's not on this forum (at least I've never seen him on here), but he does like his setup. If you want more info, PM me and I'll give you his contact info.

I'll be ordering my diff drop today and picking up the coilovers on Saturday.

I'm not too particularly good mechanically. I've only done small things like changing the shifter seat and cleaning the TB and MAF.

Shot in the dark, but is anyone willing to lend a hand? Lift party? :party:

bringing back up the subject but yeah super confused on what SS was saying about the 5100. any more enlightenment on the subject? about to pull the trigger on the lift kit at toytec with the 5100 and definitely dont want to buy it if they wont perform like i want.
