V8 or V6?
I have a 2008 SR5 4x4 V6. Stock it would get about 20 around town and about 22 on the hiway. Now that I have lifted it and installed slightly larger tires it gets about 18 in town and 19 on the hiway. Hand calculated. Although, this time of year I also let it warm up a little first so that isn't helping the mileage either. Hope that helps.

04 V8 4wd and I only get 15-16 mixed driving (50/50 city/fwy). But I've only had it for a week, going to change diff fluids, plugs, etc and see if it helps at all. 56k miles. And there are a lot of fairly steep hills on my daily commutes around SF.

I have an '08 SR5 4WD V6 also. Stock, I got around 18-19 around town (mixed city/hwy), 21 all highway. This was with the Dunlop AT20 tires.
Switching to 255/75 Goodyear Silentarmor tires, the mileage went down about 1 mpg. I think this was mostly due to a more aggressive tread than the height of the tire. (I think that switching to any tire other than the no-traction Dunlops would cause mpg to drop.)
In fact, when I use 265/70/16 snow tires in winter, mpg is slightly less than with the 255/75/17 Silentarmors. Some of this may be due to winter gas formulations.
I recently added a small leveling kit (Bilstein 5100s at the ~ 1" notch) -- made no difference in mpg.
I live at about 4700' elevation, and rarely have long/ flat/ constant speed highway drives, so I expect my mpg is at the lower end of the spectrum for similar 4Runners.
BTW, always regular unleaded, never premium. There's also always a Yakima rack on the roof rack, with bike racks (summer) or ski racks (winter) further affecting aerodynamics.

Yep, regular unleaded. I should say no lower than 86 octane rating. In CO and some other states they have 85,87, and 90 I think. So in those states I use the mid-grade. Never tried premium in the tank. My elevation is 6500' at home and 6900' at work.

V8, had it for 5 years. Originally got 15.5 mpg when we took it easy. Over time it went down to about 14 with MT tires and lift. Recently learned we had a caliper dragging when we had the diff and transfer case fluid changed. Now that the caliper is replaced we really baby it we can get 18.5 still with MT tires.

IDK why Consumer Reports had Toyota 4runner as getting bad gas mileage but they rated the Hyundai Santa Fe as getting good gas mileage while the Santa Fe gets 1 maybe 2 MPG better. That is not a huge difference.
IMO the 4runner is excellent on gas compared to other SUVs of the same size such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee which I think averages 3-4MPG less.
My 4runner computer says I average about 20mpg but I manually calculated about 19mpg average with 22-23 mpg highway. This is great considering my V6 Mazda6 averages about 20mpg.

I've owned my 03 T4R V8 for three years now, and I calculate my mileage manually after each fill up and record the info.
Typical city mileage (spring/summer/fall) for me averages between 16-17 mpg.
Typical city mileage (winter) average for me drops to between 13-14 mpg.
I don't do much highway driving anymore, but I have recorded mileage of 23-24 mpg when I did.

Bossman - happy you posted. That is what I hope to get as well, but I've only owned mine for just over a month but started tracking my mileage shortly thereafter. My research prior to buying figured I'd be in that range as well. Hopefully so. Plus we are in similar season climiates as well so that should trend well.

I had no real mpg concerns when purchasing my T4R V8 Limited with the full-time 4WD. Coming from a Lexus LS400 with a V8 that only took premium fuel, I was used to paying lots at the pumps.
I do dislike the mpg drop in the winter months, but the traction of the 4WD system in our snow/ice more than makes up for it in my mind.
Overall, for an SUV this size and with this equipment, I can live with the mpg that I get.

I'm still shocked to see people getting, or claiming to get 20+ mpg w/ the V8. Just don't see it happening. I've been able to get 20+ while going downhill at 60 mph, but that drops to the normal 15-17 once I keep driving a bit. Heck, the best I've every gotton round trip on the highway, 60-74mph, was hand calculated 16.75 mpg and I was happy! I've cleaned air sensors, run synthetic oil, k&n air filter, and have new plugs. My tires are a/t 6 ply, but not enough to make 4 MPG difference. Just my thoughts.
