TEP Trim Above Glove Box

I have noticed that the trim piece above the glove box on my TEP is getting some weird scratch/cracks. No idea what is causing this but I am 110% certain that it is not caused by wear from a human. Does anyone else with the same material above the glove box have this happening?

Well document issue try searching the forum. Some people get them replaced by the dealer. Some people wrap them. Some people get them from other trim models. Some people paint them. Some people wrap them in stickers. Some people leave it.

Google "5th gen t4r dash cracking" and read away.

I saw a lot of those trim pieces with scratches/cracks in them on used 5th gens when i was looking to buy. I remember thinking to myself "what the hell did these people do to that? How did that happen?"....now i know.

Yeah it just slowly happens out of the box. Hell mine prob had a bit of it going on when I bought it  I didn't really notice it at first because there is something more distracting about it... It matches nothing in the interior. It's a different shade and finish of grey/silver not found anywhere else in the interior.

Make zero sense to me why they chose to do that. Could have finished it the same way the radio bezel is and I would have been happy. Could have finished it in the FO carbon fiber around my shifters and I would have been stoked. Could have made it black and that would have been fine. But nope just ****ing tossed cheaply made wild card into the interior. I'm gonna wrap mine to match the FO fiber.

Took about 2.5 years before it first started showing up for me. My 3 year warranty is up in 9 days so I will take it in to see if they will replace it to buy myself some more time.

Pulled the skid off to change diff oil today and noticed that my front KDSS boot is a tad wet with a possible small leak. So I am more concerned about getting that addressed....

I would be too $$$$. Just bring them both up at the same time. Make a post when they do the repair. We would all like to see the kdss repair cost even if they warranty it.

Yes I will see what they say. It isn't very bad at all but definitely wet compared to the rear. Others here seem to have had it repaired under warranty but their leaks looked worse. But my truck only has 23k miles. Since my warranty is pretty much up, I intend to fight it hard regardless.

So I finally am getting resolution on this.

Took to dealer and they said they had to send pictures into Toyota because they have never seen it before. Waited. Toyota comes back and says that because they aren't able to discern for sure how this damage was caused and because regional has never seen such an issue before, they would not be able to cover under warranty. However, they would offer to cover half of the cost to replace as a good gesture. Since the part alone is $400+ I declined. I then sent an email to the service manger saying that there are multiple people online with the same exact issue and some have gotten it replaced under warranty. He said that they don't take into consideration forums or any online reports but offered to have a regional tech come and look and made it clear that whatever the tech decides is final(the covering 50% would be off the table). So I finally was able to take it in this week and the regional tech approved the warranty replacement, even admitting that he has seen this once before. His opinion is that this is caused by the way the trim piece is covered during shipment. Either way, a third and final trip to the dealership should finally get this taken care of.

Seems like way more effort time and money (back and forth to the dealership) then it's worth. Paint it, wrap it, ignore it, and call it a day.

I’m new to the wrapping idea. Just curious if that trim piece needs to be removed to have it wrapped or can it be done without pulling the dash apart?

$321 from Camelback. Not sure if you can remove it while in the vehicle because you can see one screw on the back side when you have the headunit out.

It will need to be removed to properly wrap. There is another thread about this issue and someone posted pictures of their finished wrapped piece. Not sure how difficult it is to get to that piece. I asked the dealer this and they had no idea, but I imagine it is just a matter of dropping the glovebox.

Pull up to a wrap place and ask. I'm willing to bet someone skilled could pull it off. But, I would just remove it and do it right.

I would pay to see someone remove it while not being in the vehicle.
