I'm going to try, but I think the front cross bar is as far forward as it will go.
I'll have to look into the airbags and see if anyone around here installs them affordably.

yeah, I was thinking I'd just put a couple layers of painters tape on there for the drive up. Probably will put it on the latches too to keep it from scratching the roof

My home is in Eagle River. Watch out for frost heaves in Canada the closest to the border the more bounce. I would not hit them more than 45 mph. The last leg from Tok to Anchorage passes the Matanuska Glacier to your left. There are good fuel stations all along the way. Roads can and will still be icy in spots. If you drive at night (not recommended) there will be animals larger than your vehicle on the road. Enjoy.

definitely trying to stick to daytime driving the whole way and will definitely not be taking it any faster than necessary.
Is it realistic to go from Whitehorse to Tok in one day (say less than 10 hours of driving)?
I do like coffee and our landlords mentioned Jitters, I'll have to try once we get there. We'll be on the south end of ER near the River and the loop, not sure how big the town is, in terms of drive times that is, but after 2 years in San Antonio, I imagine things will feel close by.

Depending on weather yes, but that is a long long stretch. It may be better to split it up. You can't do 70 part of the way and if it's foggy you will have to wait for it to clear up. It is a pretty stretch and you will want to take pics. Go easy would be my rec.
Eagle River is a small community and you can make it anywhere around town in about 10 minutes at the most. There is a main street (most towns in Alaska are set up as a long strip rather than a town center). Plenty of stores where you can get groceries and ammunition. Most good restaurants are in Anchorage. Takes about 15 to get to the base in good weather and longer in snow/ice.
When Winter starts Johnson's Tires in Eagle River can help you find the best tires for your rig. I recommend studs in Winter. Johnsons is high price spread but worth it. If you want good products for less $ go with any of the tire stores in Anchorage. Firestone makes a studded tire which gets good reviews.

hey everyone, things are getting closer, less than 2 months now. We've found a house in Eagle River to rent, the owners are stationed here at Randolph with me, so it was good to meet them and get the lowdown on the house.
Last weekend I picked up/put together the storage items and tested them out...
That Blizzard Pearl is going to get a heck of a beating...please take plenty of pictures to post and drive safe.

Nikon D80, GoPro HD Hero 2, and a couple cell phones are on the job :thumb3:
as for the paint, it has the clear plastic guard for more of the front facing surfaces, we'll see how it holds up

I don't know about the gun laws getting UP there, but once I cross the border into AK I'd have a firearm on standby for sure?

Pets are current, and I've got a 909 prefilled for my bolt gun, not going to bother with my pistols, will have my brother fly up with them later on

+1. I lived in Juneau for 2 years and they were a must.
Wish I could help you on trip advice, but we took the ferry (aka the Alaska Marine Highway) which is another kind of hell that I wouldn't recommend. Stuck with the same people and crappy food for almost 3 days. Especially bad for pets - the whole time locked in the car and only being able to get out and pee on the parking deck twice a day.
If you like the outdoors in a little bit, you'll love Alaska.
