I guess your truck really didn't like them. It's so odd since they are a well known fuel upgrade that's been around for years, I mean even Gadget had them in his 4Runner before he started selling the kits.
How does your piggyback adjust ignition timing? Is it done via the igniter circuit instead of the crank sensor?
It's a well known upgrade but based off what I've experienced with my truck there's also a large percentage of guys running these setups "tuned" that really don't have a full understanding of everything going on and say "it runs great"without really understanding of everything is working properly. Imo running one of these without a pyrometer and afr gauge is just asking for issues down the road. The 5vz is an incredibly hardy motor that allows a lot to think "well it didn't grenade instantly so it's fine" but it suffers from the same tuning issues as any other and without proper monitoring and tuning. It's one thing to make power for 5 minutes it's another to make it for 15 years and not cause damage to the motor.
It's just like the 7th Injector and my gripes with that system. It's proven but I do not believe it's the safest way to tune this setup nor is it the most powerful.
My piggyback is tied directly into the igniter circuits. By some black magic that's how it allows me to both advance and retard the timing
