The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I didn’t think to look at Rock Auto for SC stuff. Not a bad idea. That said, I’ve had some bad experiences with them in the last year or two so I’ve pretty much stopped using them.

Bad experience how ?
I always order from them and besides something being shipped later than others cause it comes from across the us
I haven’t had any actual problems

Well, they had the wrong brakes pads listed for my 62 Benz under three different part numbers but “assured me” they were correct all three times. They weren’t, two of them weren’t event close to the right size.

They sent me the incorrect valve cover gaskets for my M5 after validating the VIN.

They also failed to refund me twice after they sent the wrong/damaged parts for other orders of mine, one of which included tierods for the 4Runner that we’re missing castle nuts.

All in all I’ve probably spent nearly $15k with them in the 10 years, the last two or three years worth of parts buying has just been a worse experience than going through autozone or whoever else. All my euro parts now come from Pelican or Turner, and rest either comes OEM or someone else. RockAuto gets my business when I’m short on time and Amazon doesn’t have it, or they are the only place I can find it. I’m glad it’s been good for you. The site is great, I’ve just had challenges with them for some of my cars.

well I'm pretty sure that my Walbro fuel pump that came with my 7th injector setup is taking a dump. several days this week I had trouble starting my Runner and it was acting like no fuel. Once running it seems to do OK but something is off, like Its just a little underpowered. Also the pump has been louder than normal which is saying something. So I'm going to replace the pump but I really want to go back to a Denso pump but also want the greater flow rate. So I think I am going to try a Mazda Rx7 turbo fuel pump. Similar size and flows 223lph. Part number Denso 195130-0782. Has anyone used this or a similar pump. I'm running a 2.0 pulley boys pulley and am hitting about 12-12.5psi max boost. I am running the URD preloaded maps. I'm interested in your thoughts. :tea:

I use a similar DENSO pump off a Mitsubishi Evo IX, somewhere around 200-220 lph. The spade connector is not compatible, you'll want the wire connector from the donor vehicle or order one online and then splice it in.

How's the 2.0" working for you? Mine is off the vehicle and sitting in a box. I have not had much time/desire to work on the 4Runner, it wasn't breathing well enough to warrant the extra 0.5 PSI boost I was seeing!

that's good info thanks. Looks like I am going to do my ford tank swap at the same time so a little extra wiring wont be a big deal. As for the 2.0 pulley I have loved it. I've read that a lot of people have slippage with their belt and the 2.0 but I have not experienced that. I came from a 2.2 pulley that produced about 9-9.5psi so it has been a great jump for me. I really have to suck it up and learn to tune this thing once I get the new pump in. LOL:bounce:

Oh gotcha! Yeah that'd be a nice increase in boost! I went from 2.37" to 2.1" (big jump), then 2.1" to 2.0" (barely any change in boost), so there's wasn't quite the wow factor for me.

If you ever do get a tune though, that really wakes up that engine! I had a bigger power jump in usable torque (2500-4000 RPM's) from my tune than I did from swapping pulleys & adding fuel. It's just a bit of a pain dealing with piggybacks, standalones are somewhat easier if you can ever do it.

Hey guys, I'm sure the answers lie within this monster of a thread. First time 3.4 supercharger installer but longtime Toyota wrencher. Got everything figured out as to what exactly I have. Got all the parts to bolt on my gen 2 charger apart from the IAC check valve. Anyone know what size the vacuum line used for that is so I can source a valve cheaper than 30 bucks?

Also came with an unidentified 7th injector sans wiring and electronics. I acquired a URD controller for the 7th setup, but am still in need of quite a few things to run it. I'm planning on using the 2.2 pulley. If I were to get the slightly larger injectors like supra 318cc's would the stock computer handle them OK temporarily so I wouldn't have to disassemble the thing when I get everything else together?

I've also sorted through my hardware and figured out what all's there. Like I said I already went through the Magnuson parts list and set aside all their provided parts. I've also found the hardware and gaskets homes. I had a second identical tensioner bracket for some unknown reason.

I'm left with this box of parts that I don't know where they go or what they're for. My main concern is the machined aluminum block and bolt that goes with it along with the goofy little black aluminum bolt extender. Anyone know what these parts are for. The 7th injector that came with it looks different than the URD and uses a braided fuel line that attaches to the fuel rail by doubling the banjo bolt.

Left over bolts just means that you engineered it better than Toyota’s engineers.

Did you already use a bracket to relocate the oil dipstick? Kinda looks like some custom made trickery for the dipstick relocation bracket.

I've got a bracket I think goes for the dipstick relocation. I'm mocking it up beforehand since I bought everything used just in case I'm missing anything.

The stock computer will handle the Supra injectors just fine. But be aware that without a piggyback the stock ecu will just tune out the extra fuel they are capable of adding. I went a different route here and used the air assist style Supra injectors Denso p/n23250-46050 because they have a spray tip near identical to the 4runner and seem to play with the stock ecu better.

Also unpopular opinion here but I say ditch that 7th injector. I have heard from a lot of people over the last few months that they are still having major ping issues with the 7th and I beleive this is largely due to the fact that the 7th relies on the supercharger, which was never designed to distribute droplets of fuel, to properly distribute all the added fuel to the 6 cylinders. It's cheaper and imo a better overall solution to put the Supra injectors in and get a piggyback capable of tuning your afrs and ignition timing.
That 7th injector you have is the trd 7th injector that they included on 01 and 02s as a factory add on. It can still be controlled with the urd piggyback however.

That's the route I went and after running it for 5 months the truck is 100% ping free, runs like a champ, and I've even been able to run it on 87 octane without pinging after getting the right tune. I still run on 91 as much as I can but 87 has proven to safely work in a pinch.

The majority of that is just random garbage they threw in thinking it might be needed, it doesn't belong to the supercharger kit. Some of it may belong to the 7th injector, I've yet to install one. The only part I know you will need is the black spacer/bolt extender, it goes between the supercharger and the driver's side engine hanger.

That's what I was hoping. I'm probably going to start with the supercharger in stock form with the stock pulley and work my way up from there. I wouldn't be going the 7th route if I didn't already have it, but since I do and was able to source the controller cheaply I'm going to install it and use it run the 2.2" pulley I already have. My controller is the Urd Ftc1, unless I'm mistaken I think I should be able to skew fuel trims for all 7 injectors with it, I haven't looked far into it yet.

The final iteration may see me dumping the 7th injector but retaining the Ftc1 and going water/meth and running the 2.0" pulley that I also already have, that's a way down the road though.

Yep I'd already figured out that it wasn't needed for the standard supercharger install, but the 7th kit is far from complete. That bolt extender isn't the one that spaces the bracket out, I've already found that, it's just a spacer and a bolt. This one threads into the hole then a 10mm headed bolt threads into it.

My AFRs are about 11.5:1 at full throttle. Does anybody have theirs tuned leaner than that? I know it would improve performance and fuel economy. I thought 12.5:1 would be ok.
Also, I'm getting 14.5 at idle and cruise. In my turbo VW bug I could get that up to 15-16:1 without problems but I also know air cooled engines might have different characteristics.

Pretty much most people aim for 11.8 WOT. I think like 12.5 partial. I have mine richer to help alleviate ping but that's just me. It's all dependent on goals and such.

14.7:1 is what the ECU is always chasing so 14.5 idling/cruising is perfect. Means the engine is running perfectly from an emissions stand point. And seeing it dance higher and lower is normal. It's always adding/subtracting to get the 14.7 goal. Mine idles between 14 and 14.8 or so, maybe a hair rich. But it's tailpipe emissions are flawless when it comes to testing. You seem to be pretty much dialed in from the sounds of it.

Finally got the new air assist blue top Supra injectors installed this weekend. On initial glance it appears the tip is way too long but after measuring the 4runners intake manifold has just enough material for the longer Supra injectors to seal properly. They also include all the same style seals as the 4runner injectors unlike the brown tops and fit like a glove. As I stated in one of my previous posts these are rated at 310cc/min which is more than adequate for my fueling needs

So far driveablity is much improved from stock and possibly smoother than the brown top Supra injectors. Time will tell how mpg is affected if at all and if these have truly solved the starting issues I had with the brown tops but so far things are looking promising.

FYI...I placed an order with rock auto last week and I started getting bombarded with spam the very next day! Looks like the sold my email address.
