The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I'd get it! Totally different vehicle when supercharged.

That's what I've heard but from the very few accounts I find where people added a supercharger past 300k seemingly 90% ended with an engine swap within a couple years - if they even made it that long. And that's only 90% because the remaining 10% just go awol or end up selling the vehicle after a year or two

300K is a lot of miles for sure, although I'd be curious what the failures actually were. People bolting on the supercharger without the supporting mods like a piggyback to control high gear low rpm timing etc? There will for sure be some detonation at low RPMs and part throttle with the way these vehicles calculate timing at part throttle. That's bad on a motor regardless of how many miles it has, and would explain some of these cracked head scenarios I hear about.

Get the piggyback and tune it right and I bet these would be fine. It's easy peasy to do.

I've had an URD AIC-T for 20 years or so. It's pretty simple and has worked great. I used it with my URD 7th injector for about 15 years, then added a water/meth kit so now the 7th on spritzes a bit of fuel right at redline as a safety, but I still use the AIC-T to control timing at part throttle boost to get rid of the low gear high rpm ping before water meth engages at 7psi.

My engine let go at 200k, so once I have a fresh one in, I may consider it. I'm also planning on a regear when the engine is out, so it may be a whole different vehicle when it's done. Since my daily is a plug-in hybrid that uses almost no gas, going to 5.29s with 35s and the new blower would be just the right kind of stupid I'm good at.

Hey Guys,

I'm a new (to me) 4runner owner. I got a 2000 limited supercharged 4runner and i've been having an intermittent pinging issue.

I've done a ton of things hoping the pinging would go away but nothing has really helped...

Things i've done:

New spark plugs, New wires, 7th injector kit (stock ecu map), new fuel filter....new fuel wahlbro oversized fuel pump...etc..

I always run 91 octane and i've gone to diff gas stations....

THe problem is that as soon as i hit the gas (even a tiny bit of boost)...i start getting pinging.... Sometimes its High gear/ Low RPM but even when i'm past 2...2.5k it sometimes still pings.

After some fillups....its gets worse......but other times it goes away completely. I've done a few rounds of techron fuel and injector cleaner....nothing seems to work...

THe next step is injector cleaning....

Does anyone have any ideas that can help?

Thanks!

Your NA motor "let go" at 200K miles? What failed? Any idea why?

Do you have a wide band to monitor AFR? That's step 1 for troubleshooting fuel I think.

You say 7th injector kit with "stock ecu map". Who's 7th injector kit? Where do you have the boost reference for the kit connected?

Where are you getting your boost reference from for the 7th injector?

I'd open up the R4 program and use shop air to give 5-6psi to the boost reference line and watch MAP A in the software. Make sure it's hitting the proper cells for the shop air psi.

This system is super simple and very little that can go wrong outside of it not seeing the right amount of air pressure (boost) to the unit so it knows what to do. This assumes you have it wired properly of course. When I did mine it was all cutting and soldering, but I think now they offer a PNP adapter to make that easy.

Not exactly sure how it failed, but cyl 4 lost compression, 75 psi if I remember. Was accelerating onto the highway one morning and it starting misfiring really badly. No signs of a head gasket letting go either. Frustrating because I recently had a new timing belt, knock sensors, and a bunch of other work done a few months prior.

TBH...i dont' know about these things....when i bought the 4runner, the SC was already installed (from day 1 of the trucks life). I'll have to continue researching and learning...

What piggybacks does everyone here use?

The URD 7th injector kit is by far the most common and simplest to install. Others like the MAPECU3 are pretty involved when it comes to wiring and others like the Haltechs are very expensive starting at $2800.

I have an AEM FIC 6 but they are discontinued and no longer supported. For me it's fine as I have no plans to ever move it off the vehicle and I have all the antiquated software saved.

The golden age of tuning ended some time ago. Not much money in tuning software when you can just buy a 600 HP vehicle from the factory.

I have a question ya'll might be able to help with.

I installed the URD 7th injector kit about a month ago. I got the 7th kit along with the plug n play harness for my specific truck. Ever since install, the 7th works great....i can feel it kick in, but there is a weird issue that happens-

Every now and again (4 times in about 1,500 miles) when i come to a stop behind a light...the 4runner just shuts off. Engine turns off....lights come on. I put the trans back in P....turn the key and it turns right back on...no issues...

I don't get any engine codes and it happens very rarely but it def started after the 7th was installed. (also have the deatchworks high flow fuel pump installed as well...as recommended by gadget)

Any ideas on what it could be? Just to mention: All of the basic maintenance items are gtg...from sparks to wires...to maf...to throttle body etc...

Double check and solder your wiring if you can. If the crank or camshaft wire is loose and lose signal the engine won't start. I had that happen to me but then it just died and would not start and threw a crank sensor code.

You could also pull codes and see if you have any stored codes in the ECU that aren't showing as a light on the dash.

No stored or pending codes at all. The 2 wires were soldered...but i'm going to unwrap and reexamine...
