The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

So after completely rebuilding my supercharger its now up and running. I had to get a brand new rotor pack from ZZP since the one I had was worn beyond rebuilding. If anyone ever gets it from ZZP know that you'll have to knock the rear needle bearings in a little since the shaft ends are a little longer. Otherwise they fit perfectly.

Now I'm confused whats normal and whats not for these things without fuel mods. At around WOT I came up to almost 8psi of boost just over 4000rpm. Then boost abruptly drops right down. I have the Autometer boost gauge so should be pretty precise. I thought around 5-6psi was normal without mods. My pulley is stock.

Is your belt slipping? I had the same problem. It would be fine until the very top end, Then all of a sudden fall off.

Look for dust particles on the driver side fender near the battery and dust block.

anyone using NGK BCPR7ET plugs? they are supposably 2 steps colder as well and are used in the 4wheeler build.

I was planning on running them (have a set sitting in my office right now), but never installed them prior to pulling the SC. I wasn't a big fan of the IK22's as they were so fragile. It's what Gadget used to put in his old kits and tons of people ran them. Plus they are cheaper.

good to know thanks Robert. i might have to just try these out after the innitial set of IK22's i have. what bugged me most about the ik22 is going from dual electrodes to single. and these have tri electrodes on them so i would think they would last longer and be more efficent.

Is there gaskets to replace in this elbow prior to putting it back together. Part numbers for gaskets?

I don't think its slipping, I'm not seeing any dust anywhere. What did you do to fix it though?

I've been driving a normal 4Runner around for the past week, and OH MY GOSH GIVE ME MY SUPERCHARGED 4RUNNER BACK! Geez these things are slow without one.

My buddy runs a denso plug from a porsche I believe... He's weird and is probably sleeping, but I'll get the part number tomorrow if I cannot find it myself.

They're a dual ground, cheaper, and seem to last longer than these freaking IK22's.

hey brother! i figured you would chime in here too! i figured you might know with your last set of IK22's not lasting to long.

Unfortunately he doesn't have the part number either, but said he'd be willing to pull a plug and check this weekend.

I am still running the IK22 because put simply, they work. Very well, in fact. However, seeing how our engines EAT spark plugs (the reason they "require" a multi ground plug), not having the dual ground effectively cuts the lifespan of the plug nearly in half.

When I was looking at plugs way back when I came to the conclusion (from other's experiences) that the NGK 2 step colder plug last a little longer, but did not perform as well with the factory gapping, and I wasn't comfortable gapping a multi ground plug. And they were a bit more expensive which at the time was a pretty big turn off.

So i need a little help. I took my 1st gen SC of my 98 4Runner and im in the process of installing it on my 2001 4runner. The 2001 does not have some of the vacuum hoses that my 98 does. For one is the vacuum hose from the brake booster. Can I just cap off the ports on the SC that aren't being used?

Yes you can

Wow...Speedy. This really surprises me that you're not running headers. The exhaust manifolds on our 3.4 looks very restrictive. I've always been taught...if your forcing more air into the engine...you have to allow the air to freely exit also. If the exhaust can't exit freely then this will slow down/stop you putting more air in...thus defeating your whole purpose of supercharging!

As much money as it cost to S/C our Runners...what's another $500 for Doug Thorley headers? Imagine getting another 25+ hp...not the mention fuel mileage!...at least that's MHO.

Agreed, I did headers, high flow cat & exhaust because I planned on getting a SC someday.

was installing the headers a very hard job? it seems like you'd have to remove a lot of stuff (like the SC) to gain access. could you do it in the driveway?

It would be a pain.. A lot of people recommend that you don't even attempt it with out a body lift.

Yeah it's way to tight in there without a body lift or temporarily lifting the body up. I actually was looking at things yesterday and 1.5" body lift makes changing out the exhaust manifolds easy. All the bolts and just are easy to get to. There is plenty of room to wiggle things around.
